CERVINO 2015: THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CONQUEST OF THE MATTERHORN
2015 is an important year for Breuil - Cervinia Valtournenche and for Italy as a whole, marking as it does the 150th anniversary of the first
ascent of the Matterhorn by Edward Whymper from the Swiss side (July 14) and Jean Antoine Carrel from the Italian side (July 17, 1865).
Cervino 2015 will put the Mountain right in the spotlight, with events relating to the history and characters that have made it famous all over the
world.
Breuil - Cervinia Valtournenche will become the hub of a programme of activities focusing on exploration of the area, its art and its excellent
food and wine, in addition to the popular skiing and sporting attractions available to the thousands of tourists who flock to the area every year.
MAIN EVENTS ON THE PROGRAMME

The Matterhorn, an ever topical conquest. 150 years of mountaineering, art and culture. An exhibition that tells the story of the
men and women who have written the story of the Matterhorn. You will be taken on a walk through the streets of Cervinia, that will
allow you to enter the history of the Gran Becca from before its conquest to the present day.

For Jean Antoine Carrel. Concert at the foot of the Matterhorn with music by Leone Sinigaglia, composer and mountaineer rescued
during a storm on the Matterhorn by Jean Antoine Carrel, the first man to reach the summit from the Italian side and who died in the
courageous undertaking on August 25, 1890.

Night–time illumination of the Matterhorn. A repeat of the extraordinary show staged during the Christmas holidays of 2014,
powerful lights will illuminate the Gran Becca at night to celebrate its uniqueness and majesty (10-20 July 2015).

Lights on the Matterhorn. On the anniversary of Carrel’s first ascent, a pyromusical show, with fireworks on the mountain ridges, will
enchant the public at sunset (17 July 2015).

Night on the Matterhorn. An all-nighter in Breuil - Cervinia, with entertainment, music and night-time shopping (16 July 2015).
All summer long, conferences and cultural events related to the celebrations will be on offer; the calendar will soon be available online at
cervinia.it.
SUMMER AT BREUIL-CERVINIA VALTOURNENCHE
Summer at the foot of the Matterhorn offers an activity almost unique in Italy, summer skiing at the 3,500 m of Plateau Rosà (accessible from
Cervinia by cable car in just over half an hour). In its turn, Testa Grigia opens up a veritable paradise for all high mountain sports; from high
altitude trekking to mountaineering proper, and downhill biking.
Down in the resort itself a wider range of sports is available that can be enjoyed even by the less adventurous.
Cervinia and Valtournenche are sites for a variety of mountain bike trails but you can also take your bike out on to the road and experience for
yourself exactly where the top cyclists have “pedalled” (on May 29 Cervinia will once again see the arrival of a stage of the Tour of Italy 2015).
Walks on the mountain paths (all excellently marked out) can go from the very simple to the very challenging and excursions to the mountain
huts often have the aim of allowing you to enjoy the excellent local cuisine at altitude. For golfers, the 18-hole golf course at the foot of the
Matterhorn is a must venue. The course starts from the very centre of Cervinia and continues in the direction of the famous “Bay of Seals” lake
where sports fishing is an attraction.
A visit to the Museum of Mountain Guides at Breuil - Cervinia, to revisit the exploits of the men of the Matterhorn who shaped the history of
mountaineering, and the brand new Maison de l'Alpage museum of Valtournenche, where the culture and traditions of mountain people can be
relived, must not be missed.
For those wishing to indulge in outdoor fitness there are 2 fully equipped wellness trails along which you will also be able to discover all the
beauty of the area (Valtournenche and Maen).
The zone is easily reachable from the international airports of Turin Caselle and Milan Malpensa (about an hour and a half transfer time).
