« AU PAYS DU RALENTI »
released March10, 2014
27 years, author, composer, singer, producer… Floating somewhere between pop and folk, Candide delivers us his
French utopias. We see an example of tunes of cultivated pop, thoroughly bred in the English musical gardens,
rubbing shoulders with la langue française. An homage to French chanson, thus naturally varied, but here am
example of where the natural musicality of guitars measures up to its verbal contents. Welcome in Candide’s
musical garden.
Following his first album « Et si… » in 2010, Candide now returns with his second album, “Au Pays du Ralenti”.
With a clear focus on his worldly surroundings, and nourished by his rich experiences of the past 4 years, Candide is
now ready to share his stories regarding the outside world, music and naturally, the women out there!
The Album kicks off with “La Cour des Grands”, laid-back blues led by the tunes of Guillaume Barré-Van
Ruymbeke’s harmonica: Growing up without losing one’s liveliness and carefree attitude, whilst maintaining a
self-ironic attitude towards oneself – this is Candide’s appeal. The very funky “J’aurais voulu” comes along like an
intimate conversation, whilst mockingly drawing attention to a system which parks all young artists in an initial state
of floating incertainty. “Au pays du ralenti” prompts us to put our feet up, get closer to one another, to start dwelling
in the simple pleasures of life, and recognize the irreplaceability of authentic, face-to-face human relationships.
Candide then dedicates the beautiful part to the women out there: in “Le charme de ces dames” he fails to resist not
only women, but the eternal theme of true love. “Eléa” and “Vampires de l’amour” are accounts of love in shapes
of their impossible, idealized and consummate versions.
“La touche zero”, recorded late at night, and “Loin de nos frontières”, produced in the rush of a dawning studio
time, illustrate another side to Candide’s repertoire: Sensitivity and humanism form the ground of his fundamentally
uncorrupted character. With “Vu d’Ici”, he captures us with a song that whispers like a magical formula into our ear.
These lyrics came up during a solitary walk, after which the impressive snapshot was instantly held and formulated.
Musically, the album rests within a 60s-pop ambiance: omnipresent acoustic guitar, tremolo or soft crunch on the
electric guitars, choirs reminiscent of The Kinks, unprecedented the vocal slap back echo. The harmonica
accompanies the guitar slides and a Banjo is introduced towards the final breaths of the CD, carrying a warm
ambiance - resolute folk.
The album is truly home-made: the vast majority was recorded in the artist’s family house, at the Opal coast that is
facing the English coast. With a calm, nearly deserted countryside setting, and a hay-filled barn, The CD was
produced between a musical dyad. Laurent Combes, friend and musician, and Candide joined forces and locked
themselves up together. The majority of songs stems from a real basis between the two men. The objective was to
create an album of a handcrafted, authentic sort and to make it as lively as possible.
After his remarkable performance at the Main Square Festival in 2013, his first gigs with Alain Chamfort and
Louis Chedid, his West Tour with 25 gigs in 30 days (a near-record), Candide is ready for another round of
presenting his album on stage: the current Tour began in January and his new album “Au Pays du Ralenti” is due to
be released March10, 2014.
