The Cosmos Wind Ensemble brings together five of Malta – based musicians in
Malta, in the country’s most dynamic chamber music ensemble. The group features
Rebecca Hall (flute) and John McDonough (oboe), Godfrey Mifsud (clarinet) and
Ulrike Buhlmann (bassoon) and José García Gutiérrez (french horn). As the musicians
come from all over the world, the name Cosmos reflects and celebrates their diverse
backgrounds.
.All of the members of the ensemble perform regularly as soloists and orchestral
musicians with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, of which Rebecca Hall and John
McDonough hold positions of Principal Flute and Principal Oboe respectively.
Godfrey Mifsud is a Clarinet Tutor at the Johann Strauss School of Music in Valletta
(Malta) and both he and Rebecca Hall are lecturers in Performance Studies at the
University of Malta. Ulrike Buhlmann is also a full time member of the MPO whilst
retaining her links with orchestras in her native Berlin. José García Gutiérrez has
performed to great acclaim as principal horn of the Malta Philharmonic, in addition to
his post as Principal Horn with the RTVE Orchestra Madrid.
Since being founded in 2005, the ensemble has shown a strong interest in the
premieres of works by Maltese composers, including Charles Camilleri, Mariella
Cassar and Veronique Vella. The group has recently invited Maltese composer Albert
Garzia to serve as its first “composer in residence”. Garzia’s most recent composition
for the ensemble, “On the Edge of the Eastern Ocean” (based on the writings of
Canadian Author Pamela Hall) for quintet, piano and narrator, will be premiered in
2014.
2013-2014 sees the group perform in Germany, Netherlands, Malta as well as Canada.
They also continue their now established position as “Ensemble in Residence” at
Malta’s National Theatre, the Manoel.
