Against Doctor’s Orders Reger was never one to follow doctor's orders, even after his complete nervous and physical breakdown in February 1914. He had hardly settled in Merano to recuperate when he bought music paper and sat down to write his "Three Duos in the Old Style op. 131b." And the Piano Quartet op. 133 soon followed. Like No Other The critics were full of praise for the Leipzig premiere of Reger's op. 133, "In short, this is an extraordinarily beautiful composition, in its magnificence of sound like no other in Reger's chamber oeuvre." Others even opined that it was "the most substantial work brought forth by modern chamber music." Simply the Tops The Mannheim String Quartet began earning top praise and top prizes a mere two years after its founding. In the years following 1983 it earned first prize after first prize at competitions such as the Karl Klinger Competition in Hanover, International String Quartet Competition in Evian, and German Music Competition in Bonn. Today the four instrumentalists regularly perform at the top international festivals. Celebrity Endorsement The great French composer Jean Françaix said of the Mannheim String Quartet, "Their rhythm, teamwork, and typically German sense of structure combine with fantasy and sensibility in the most wonderful way. I have never heard anything like this, except in my head, during the most meticulous score-reading." On a Rave Wave Vol. 5 brought the Mannheim String Quartet and Claudius Tanski countless rave reviews, and this MDG chamber music CD was also awarded the German Record Critics Prize and ECHO Classic Award in 1997.
