Microdermabrasion Q ‐ Why should one do microdermabrasion? A ‐ Microdermabrasion is a convenient, inexpensive, fast procedure to quickly achieve a glowing smooth skin especially prior to a special event. Q ‐ What Is Microdermabrasion? A ‐ Microdermabrasion is an effective, non‐surgical way to get rid of rough skin, oiliness and suntan by exfoliating the top layers of the skin. No chemicals or laser beams are used. Over a period of time, microdermabrasion also stimulates collagen production, helping the skin to rejuvenate faster than normal. Q ‐ What is the difference between crystal and diamond polish? A ‐ While crystal polish uses aluminium oxide crystals, diamond polish uses a diamond tip to achieve same results but without crystals. Q ‐ What Does Micro Dermabrasion Involve? A ‐ The skin is first cleansed after which the doctor starts the procedure using a hand‐held device. The aluminum oxide micro crystal flow is sandblasted through a small tube pressed against the skin. The tube also vacuums back dead skin cells and used micro crystals. The treatment is used across the entire face and just not on the treated areas, so there is no inconsistence in skin texture or color. After microdermabrasion the skin is soothed with a sun block. Alternatively, a moisturizing and whitening mask is applied. However diamond microdermabrasion achieves the same results without the crystals. Q ‐ What Is The Difference Between Microdermabrasion And Dermabrasion? A ‐ Dermabrasion is a mechanical procedure that uses a power driver hand‐held device to remove the top layers of the skin. It needs general or a local anesthetic, depending on the treated area. Dermabrasion lasts between a few minutes and two hours, depending on the depth and area of the skin resurfacing. After dermabrasion treatment, there is pin point bleeding and the skin is red, swollen and extremely sensitive for about 10 days. Dermabrasion can offer visible improvement by treating deep wrinkles, scars, and hyperpigmentation. Microdermabrasion is much less invasive. A doctor uses a sandblaster‐like hand‐held device to spray and circulate high pressure flow of aluminum oxide crystals onto the skin. Used crystals and dead skin cells are then vacuumed back into the microdermabrasion machine, leaving the skin clean and smooth. Q ‐ Is Aluminum Oxide Safe? A ‐ Aluminum oxide crystals are perfectly safe and non‐toxic if ingested. They don't cause adverse skin reactions and they are not carcinogenic. Q ‐ Who Can Perform Microdermabrasion? A ‐ Microdermabrasion is to be performed only by trained dermatologists or technicians. This is important as too aggressive procedure can cause excessively dry and dull skin or too mild will cause no effect. How Much Time Does Micro Dermabrasion Require? A typical micro derm abrasion face treatment takes between 20 and 30 minutes. Is Micro Abrasion Suitable For Me? Generally microdermabrasion is suitable for most people. However it is judicious to have the doctor’s consultation prior as the doctor can examine the skin and guide what is best for ones’ skin. Will I Experience Any Discomfort During Treatment? Does It Hurt? Microdermabrasion treatment is painless. Some patients have reported some itchiness or stinginess when micro crystals came in contact with their skin. The face may appear a little pinkish in the first 24 hours, but one should not experience any itchiness or pain. How Soon Can I Return To Work? One can return to work the minute one leaves the doctor's office. When do Microdermabrasion results become visible? One can see result after the first treatment. The skin will look cleaner, healthier with a fresh pink glow. What care should one take after the treatment? One must use a moisturizing sunscreen after microdermabrasion, to avoid sundamage after leaving the doctor’s office. Use moisturizer during the first few days. Avoid sun exposure for atleast a week after the treatment. Don’t use any peeling agent for the next 3‐4 days. Can my scars go with microdermabrasion? Microdermabrasion cannot cure scarring or deeply spotted areas on your face and body. Microdermabrasion works well at the very top layer of the skin. It can’t reconstruct the epidermis like laser surgery or dermabrasion.
