Geochemestry and GIS within the the Holocene Geoscience Research Cluster
(HoloGRC)
www.hgi-cgs.hr
Basic and applied research on Holocene processes, deposits, and water related
to the Croatian karst part of the Dinarides eco-region. The research groups
focus is on environmental change during the Holocene within the karst as a
result of both climate and landuse change and the geological framework.
Holocene climate change is conducted in the Group. Lake sediments, soil
deposits and landforms, plant fossils (pollen, and macrofossils), animal fossils
(ostracods) and GIS are used to document and explain recent climate change
Current projects:
“Holocene sediments as archives of environmental change in the Adriatic
basins” funded by the Croatian Ministry of Science
“Climate change and water supply” (CC-Waters) SEE Transnational Cooperation
Project with the Lead Partner Vienna Waterworks

The scientists from Radiocarbon and Tritium Laboratory develop measurement
techniques of cosmogenic radioisotopes (14C, 3H), and are engaged in use of
isotopes in multidisciplinary scientific research in archaeology, geology,
hydrogeology, geochemistry, paleoclimatology and ecology. Significant part of
investigations is performed in karst environment using isotopic and
geochemical analyses.
Current projects:
- Natural radioisotopes in investigation of karst ecosystems and dating
- Influence of climate and environmental changes to the process of biologicaly
induced calcite pricipitation in the Plitvice Lakes
