HAIU outbreak notification
Outbreaks for Healthcare Associated Infection Unit (HAIU) notification
Normal processes should be followed for advising the Department of Health of detection of a
notifiable disease (e.g. Legionella).
Outbreaks of the organisms listed below should also be notified directly to the HAIU, and
weekly updates of total case numbers should be provided to the HAIU until the outbreak is
declared over.
Further information on outbreak management can be found in relevant Operational Directives.
For advice on reporting outbreaks to the HAIU, please email [email protected]
When should an outbreak be reported to the HAIU?
Carbapenem Resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE)
•
When there is any transmission to a secondary case.
Gastrointestinal diseases (including C. difficile)
•
When there is an outbreak of infectious gastrointestinal disease that has resulted in bed
closures AND/OR includes healthcare workers.
Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA); or Vancomycin Resistant
Enterococci (VRE);
•
When there has been spread outside of room contacts to more than two
epidemiologically linked cases.
Other MROs of significance (e.g. Multi-resistant Pseudomonas)
•
When there has been spread of any MRO of concern that may impact other HCFs
The HAIU will communicate the outbreak information to appropriate public and private
healthcare facilities following a discussion with the affected HCF.
