Interested in Infectious Disease Epidemiology? The Wisconsin Division of Public Health (DPH) in cooperation with the Department of Population Health Sciences is excited to invite applications for a student team to assist in surveillance and outbreak investigations in the Bureau of Communicable Diseases and Emergency Response (BCDER). Team members will gain unique and valuable experience working in a state health department. The Surveillance and Outbreak Support (SOS) Team is comprised of UW graduate students with interest in public health and infectious diseases. Team activities are primarily in support of surveillance and investigation of enteric diseases and food and waterborne outbreak investigations; however, the team will be available to assist with other disease investigations within the Communicable Disease Epidemiology Section as necessary. Duties include conducting telephone follow-up with laboratories and health care providers, assisting CDES staff with data entry and data cleaning of enteric disease reports, supporting local and state efforts to complete follow-up interviews with individuals diagnosed with important enteric pathogens, including E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella and providing outbreak response surge capacity to enable more complete and timely telephone interviews of case patients and controls, especially during evening and weekend hours. BCDER is looking for two students who are available to work approximately 20 hours per week beginning in late May or early June through August and who can continue working approximately 10-15 hours per week through the upcoming 2011-2012 academic year. Hours of work will be primarily afternoon and evening shifts and may include some weekend shifts (Sunday evening). Work-study students are encouraged to apply.
