Local donations bring the
Heart Center to life

One of the most compelling health care
stories started as a dream three years ago
in Waconia and has now come to fruition. After thousands of volunteer hours,
donations from hundreds of residents and
business leaders, and the generosity of two
families, the Minneapolis Heart Institute at
Ridgeview Heart Center is now open. Thanks
to an area-wide fundraising campaign, the
effort currently tops $7.4 million. It’s the biggest philanthropic project Ridgeview Medical Center has undertaken in its long history,
and is among the largest independent hospital campaigns ever in this region.
Two families were the driving force behind
this effort. Lead donations to initiate the
construction and purchase key equipment
were made by the Fleischhacker family in
the name of Chaska-based Lake Region
Medical, and Waconia residents Norm and
Ann Hoffman.
“It is unique for a community hospital to
take on such an ambitious fundraising effort,
but it is the best way to develop innovative
projects when operating revenue just isn’t
enough,” says Doug Stasek, vice president,
Ridgeview Foundation. Stasek adds, “This
proves t hat when people w ith a v ision
like the Fleischhackers and Hoffmans join
together and are passionate about a goal
they are able to make a huge difference in
people’s lives and improve the community
they live in.”
It is clear that area residents and the business community felt Ridgeview was the right
place for a state-of-the-art heart center. Their
generosity now provides the west-metro
community with peace of mind, and it also
creates a model that health care centers
across the country can emulate.

Center president and CEO, discuss the new heart center partnership in front of Ridgeview.

“Cardiac care at Ridgeview
advanced to a state-of-theart cardiology center overnight. To develop a program
like this could take 30 years,”
says Luis Pagan-Carlo, MD,
FACC, the Center’s medical
director.
The Ridgeview community
benef its from partnering
with one of the nation’s best
in heart care. In t he U.S.
News & World Report annual
ranking of America’s medical
centers, Abbott Northwestern
Ridgeview nurse Kristine Friske, RN, and Minneapolis Heart Institute echo
technician Robert Christenson, RDCS, run a stress test on a patient.
Hospital ranked No. 28 for
heart care and surgery out
of the 5,462 hospitals evaluated and also received the
2007 Hea lt hGrades A merica’s Best Hospitals Award.
Abbott Northwestern is also
rated No. 1 in the state and
one of only 17 hospitals in
the country to have a 30-day
heart attack survival rate better than the national rate of
16.4 percent
The new 11,000-square-foot
Heart Center includes a catheterization lab, an outpatient
clinic with six exam rooms,
and new diagnostic and
stress test areas—all located
near t he ex isting 22-bed
Cardiac/Intensive Care Unit.
Equipment in the cath lab
mimics that found at Minneapolis Heart Institute so that
there is a smooth transition
for staff from one hospital to
the other. It is staffed by fulltime cardiologists from the
Minneapolis Heart Institute
including Dr. Pagan-Carlo;
Scott Sharkey, MD; and physician assistant Ty Harrison.
By year’s end, there will be an
onsite interventionalist in the
cath lab.

Rare heart disease gets the right treatment locally
Luis Pagan-Carlo, MD, FACC, was called in
to look at Wolf’s test results. “What struck me
at first is that her symptoms and her story
did not quite fit with what we were seeing,”
says Dr. Pagan-Carlo, who has been seeing
patients at Ridgeview and its associated
clinics for eight years.
He continued to dig, referring Wolf for
further testing, conferring with colleagues
about her unusual case and eventually
uncovering that Wolf has a rare genetic

with Dr. Pagan-Carlo are less frequent now,
but she says it’s so nice to have a specialist
with his credentials so close to home.
The best part about having Dr. Pagan-Carlo,
his medical team and the Heart Center so
close and accessible is that Wolf doesn’t have
to worry anymore. “I’m so lucky,” she says.
“They are always there for me.”

A fast heartbeat is what Kathy Wolf thought
caused her sudden headaches and fatigue
that forced her to lie down to catch her
breath. Her doctors told her since her early
twenties not to worry about these symptoms,
explaining they were caused by an extra
heartbeat. But, Wolf did just that—she
worried. Finally, when her husband, Gary,
had health issues of his own, Wolf decided
she’d better get to the bottom of her own
medical problems.
Her checkup and echocardiogram at
Ridgeview Medical Center revealed that she
was a walking time bomb. “I blew them out
of the water,” Wolf, now 50 years old, recalls.
“It was quite alarming because they thought
I’d had a heart attack or several already.”

heart disease called arrhythmogenic right
ventricular dysplasia (ARVD). However, in
her case, both the right and left ventricles
are affected. Once diagnosed, Dr. PaganCarlo and other medical staff helped Wolf
control the disease through medications,
a pacemaker, a defibrillator and lifestyle
changes.
Wolf believes t hat Dr. Paga n-Ca rlo’s
diligence saved her life and that he is the
reason she can now live a norma l life,
spending time at the family’s cabin and
playing with her grandchildren. Her visits
Playing actively with her two little
