After thousands of volunteer hours, donations from hundreds of residents and business leaders, and the generosity of two families, the Minneapolis Heart Institute at Ridgeview Heart Center is now open. Thanks to an area-wide fundraising campaign, the effort currently tops $7.4 million. It’s the biggest philanthropic project Ridgeview Medical Center has undertaken in its long history, and is among the largest independent hospital campaigns ever in this region. Two families were the driving force behind this effort. Lead donations to initiate the construction and purchase key equipment were made by the Fleischhacker family in the name of Chaska-based Lake Region Medical, and Waconia residents Norm and Ann Hoffman. “It is unique for a community hospital to take on such an ambitious fundraising effort, but it is the best way to develop innovative projects when operating revenue just isn’t enough,” says Doug Stasek, vice president, Ridgeview Foundation. Stasek adds, “This proves t hat when people w ith a v ision like the Fleischhackers and Hoffmans join together and are passionate about a goal they are able to make a huge difference in people’s lives and improve the community they live in.” It is clear that area residents and the business community felt Ridgeview was the right place for a state-of-the-art heart center. Their generosity now provides the west-metro community with peace of mind, and it also creates a model that health care centers across the country can emulate. Kevin Graham, MD, president of the Minneapolis Heart Institute® (left), and Robert Stevens, Ridgeview Medical Center president and CEO, discuss the new heart center partnership in front of Ridgeview. The Ridgeview community benef its from partnering with one of the nation’s best in heart care. Abbott Northwestern is also rated No. 1 in the state and one of only 17 hospitals in the country to have a 30-day heart attack survival rate better than the national rate of 16.4 percent The new 11,000-square-foot Heart Center includes a catheterization lab, an outpatient clinic with six exam rooms, and new diagnostic and stress test areas—all located near t he ex isting 22-bed Cardiac/Intensive Care Unit. Equipment in the cath lab mimics that found at Minneapolis Heart Institute so that there is a smooth transition for staff from one hospital to the other. It is staffed by fulltime cardiologists from the Minneapolis Heart Institute including Dr. Pagan-Carlo; Scott Sharkey, MD; and physician assistant Ty Harrison. By year’s end, there will be an onsite interventionalist in the cath lab. The new, state-of-the-art catheterization lab located at Ridgeview mimics those found at the Minneapolis Heart Institute. Ilga Alexander HEALTHVIEWS STAFF WRITER A fast heartbeat is what Kathy Wolf thought caused her sudden headaches and fatigue that forced her to lie down to catch her breath. Her doctors told her since her early twenties not to worry about these symptoms, explaining they were caused by an extra heartbeat. But, Wolf did just that—she worried. Finally, when her husband, Gary, had health issues of his own, Wolf decided she’d better get to the bottom of her own medical problems. Her checkup and echocardiogram at Ridgeview Medical Center revealed that she was a walking time bomb. “I blew them out of the water,” Wolf, now 50 years old, recalls. “It was quite alarming because they thought I’d had a heart attack or several already.” Minneapolis Heart Institute cardiologist Minneapolis Heart Institute nurse clinician Mary Parpart, RN (left), and Kathy Wolf have a special bond. heart disease called arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD).
