2-digit
calculation
We can make equivalent number sentences to help solve problems.
eg Henri keeps 8 chickens and 2 roosters. His mother has the same number
of fowls, but she has 6 chickens. How many roosters does she have?
Working: 8 + 2 is the same as 6 + ?
8 + 2 is 10 which is the same as 6 + 4, so Henri’s mother has 4 roosters.
1 Make three number sentences which have the same total as:
a 4+7
____________________ ____________________ ____________________
b 5+8
____________________ ____________________ ____________________
c 11 + 6 ____________________ ____________________ ____________________
d 16 + 9 ____________________ ____________________ ____________________
e 18 + 6 ____________________ ____________________ ____________________
2 Match the equivalent number sentences and write them showing equivalence.
17 + 2 = 15 + 4
eg 17 + 2
15 + 4

3 Show how to use equivalent number sentences to answer the questions.
a I saved $15 one week and then another $20 the next week.
Jenni saved $13 the first week and wants to equal my savings in the next week.
How much more does she have to save?
