NGK highlights the importance of care with motorcycles spark plugs
Spark plugs on two-wheeled vehicles work in conditions more severe than in cars
The components of motorcycles work constantly in conditions more severe than in cars,
therefore motorcycle manufacturers indicate in their owner's manuals the replacement of spark
plugs in different periods according to the characteristics of the model. To avoid surprises and
breakdowns the NGK, largest manufacturer and specialist in spark plugs worldwide, guides the
motorcyclist to perform a check on the part every 3,000 km.
Motorcycle engines are more compact making spark plugs have reduced dimensions and
different heat rating, i.e., the spark plug used in motorcycles is "cooler". The rotation of the
engine of these vehicles typically turns over 6,000 RPM and, most often, in rotations above those
used in cars.
NGK recommends that before the application of the spark plug, the repairer see the NGK

The flex fuel system was improved more recently for motorcycles, but just as in cars, brings the
concern for use in low temperatures, especially because this type of vehicle does not have coldstart system, NGK reinforces the need for spark plugs in good condition.
"As the amperage of motorcycle batteries usually is less, the insistence to start the vehicle may
exhaust the battery. Another problem is a possible soaking of the spark plug with fuel. Spark
plugs in good condition can avoid many problems such as difficulty in starting the vehicle, high
fuel consumption, irregularities in the operation, failures during recoveries and increase in the
levels of pollutants emissions", explains Hiromori Mori, Technical Assistance Technician of NGK.
The Technician points out that cars have multiple cylinders which allow, in case of any
malfunctions, the owner proceed to a safe place. "Due to the motorcycles has a single cylinder,
in the case of lack of maintenance of the system, inevitably the vehicle will stop", adds Hiromori.
In addition to the spark plug, NGK produces the resistor covers that have its function to conduct
high voltage produced by the Coil to the spark plugs without allowing current leakage. The
products are designed to withstand high temperatures and voltages and ensure perfect sealing
between the spark plug and the terminal. Important factor when the motorcycle is used on rainy
days or flooded places in order to avoid engine failures.
NGK also offers colorful terminals with the same function of the Resistor Covers standard and
that allow customizing the motorcycle, gathering strong aesthetic appeal and increasing the
personal appreciation of property.
Only available to the aftermarket, the Colorful Terminal is sold in kits that come with colorful
pipe to the coil wire, reflective adhesive and, of course, terminal itself. To give options to
consumer, are offered three colors options: blue, yellow and red. The product meets the most
models of motorcycles, and can be used in applications that use the type LD05FP and VD05FMH
terminals.
