Student Embryology Sheet
Stages of Development
I. Early
Look at the “Early Stages” Strip featuring the early embryos from 8 different animals: a
calf, tortoise, human, chick, rabbit, salamander, fish, and pig. See if you can figure out which is
which and write or place the card below your guess.
Write your order here:
What similarities can you see among the 8 embryos? You can list or draw the similar
structures/shapes.
II. Mid
Look at the “Mid Stages” Strip and see if you can figure out which embryo is which now.
Write or place the card below your guess.
Write your order here:
What similarities are still present? What differences have emerged?
III. Late
Look at the “Late Stages” Strip and try again to label each embryo. Write or place the
card below your guess.
Write your order here:
Do you feel more confident about your guesses now than before? Why or why not?
Embryology Assessment
Name:________________
1. Examine the embryonic development of the organism below. Is this animal a chordate?
Defend your claim with several pieces of evidence and explain your reasoning.
2. Examine the embryonic development of the organism below. Is this animal a chordate?
Defend your claim with several pieces of evidence and explain your reasoning.
3. Researchers are looking for a model organism to use in the study of a new bacteria that is not
well understood. This bacteria can infect humans and seems to cause a variety of problems
including flu-like aches, fevers, and numbness. It is thought that the bacteria attacks the spinal
cord. Which of the animals on the previous page would you suggest the scientists use as a model
organism. Be sure to explain to them why that animal would be a good choice.
