Ullambana Full Day retreat. August 13th from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Silent potluck lunch. month. According to a tradition that seems to come from both Taoism and
Mahayana Buddhism, but perhaps older layers of our tradition. This celebration and
ceremony marked the end of the summer practice period for the Buddhas monastic
community. The ceremony also celebrates a story about Buddha’s disciple, Mahamaudgalyayana (Mogallana or Moelin).
This lay disciple, who was clairvoyant, saw that his deceased mother was in the
netherworld, tormented with starvation.
He brought food, but it burst into flames before she could eat. Mogallana begged
Shakyamuni Buddha for help.
Buddha responded that “the awesome spiritual power of …'Sangha' from all ten
directions is necessary for salvation to be restored.”
He further instructed Mogallana that by making generous offerings of prayers, and
food, bedding and other supplies, he and his companions could benefit not only his
mother but also others who were suffering in the same way.
For some this celebration is about feeding the ghosts of ancestors and others who
have died, we extend this by our desire to share the bounty of this season with those
who are hungry or are in need. We open our hearts to suffering and unfulfilled
hunger in all beings, including ourselves
On August 13th our sangha takes up the call to feed and care for those who hunger.
We will begin in the morning with sitting and an opportunity for work in the room
with Sarah Bender Sensei and share a silent potluck lunch. We will welcome the
children of the sangha to share in the day we will hold the Ullambana ceremony.
We will sing, chant, chant and eat. We will make offerings of food or money that will be donated to Cooperative Care http://cooperativecare.org/index.htm for those
in the community who need it. We’ll call out to all hungry hearts, “Your joy and
your sorrow, I make it mine.”
