Mouth Care After Surgery
• Hydrogen peroxide, 3 % is available at your pharmacy without prescription
• Mix half and half with warm water
• Use as a mouth rinse or gargle.
• Use after meals and at bedtime following oral surgery until the area heals.
• Use as daily maintenance to clean tonsils of residue called tonsilliths.
• Mouth sores and healing incisions will become covered with a yellow-grey membrane. This is the appearance of a
normal healing process and does not imply infection.
• Peroxide has a bubbling, scrubbing action which removes food residue and debris
• It is rich in oxygen, so inhibits the growth of odor-causing mouth bacteria. These bacteria are mostly anaerobes, which
means they grow better in an oxygen-poor environment.
