Instructions on the use of Removable retainer
1.
It has to be worn at least 22 hours a day.
2.
It is to be removed from the mouth only while eating, drinking,
brushing and swimming, and kept in the box provided. You can drink
water with the appliance in mouth, though; nothing else.

If due to any reason, it needs to be kept out of the mouth for more
than 1 hour, it must be kept under water in a box.
For a day or so, you'll be collecting lot of spit in the mouth. Keep
swallowing.
For 5-10 days, you'll have some problem in speaking. Talk as much as
possible, to get over with this problem.
It has to be cleaned at least once a day with a toothbrush using any
detergent. Do not use a toothpaste to clean the retainers.
Please put it on and remove it, only as instructed, to avoid any
damage to it.
Do not remove it with your tongue or play with it in your mouth, as
that might make it very loose or cause some damage, for which you
will be charged. Also, there was an instance of one of my patients
swallowing the retainer, because of this habit. (The appliance had to
be surgically removed from her stomach later)
If you lose it, you’ll have to pay @ Rs. 9000/- each, for a new one.
Retention is one of the most important, but sadly, one of the most
neglected parts of orthodontic treatment, primarily because the control
of the appliance is in the patient’s hand. Minimum 6 – 8 months wear is
mandatory, beyond which retention varies from person to person. A
check up with the orthodontist once in 3 to 6 months is a must.
