Web texts and Web sites: The Complete Package
8 NOVEMBER – 12 NOVEMBER 2010
R5 310 FOR A WEEK LONG WORKSHOP (SESSIONS CAN ALSO BE ATTENDED SEPARATELY)
INCLUDES PRESENTATIONS, WORKSHOP MATERIAL AND LUNCH
Workshop content
Web sites are an all-important communication medium for any institution or company. Therefore an
effective web site that answers to the needs of readers and clients is non-negotiable.
From 8 November – 12 November 2010 the Stellenbosch University Language Centre will be
presenting a comprehensive workshop series on the design, development and maintenance of a web
site. We will aim to equip participants to play a meaningful role in all aspects of web site design and
management, by focusing on both the technical and the content aspects of a web site.
The workshop series consists of three separate sessions, forming a logical unit. Interested persons can,
however, also enter for the individual sessions. Please find more information below:
Session 1: Web texts: Designing effective on-line communication (8 & 9 November) – R2 215
Web sites are an important medium of communication, and specific factors influence the effective
communication of information on a web site.
This session is aimed at those individuals who are responsible for supplying information for a web site,
those who have to write and design texts for a web site, and those responsible for keeping information
on a web site updated.
Practical advice for electronic text design will form the basis of the session, and participants will have the
opportunity to write and discuss shorter web texts. This session will focus on topics such as:
The difference between web text and hard copy
Methods to organise the information
The amount and sequence of content
How to apply links and headings effectively
How to utilise the size of the computer screen
The effective use of typography and colour
General guidelines for page layout for the web
The session will be presented in a computer user area, and participants will therefore be able to
investigate and analyse example material interactively on the Internet.
Session 2: Graphic elements with Photoshop (10 November) – R1 375
In this one-day session participants will be introduced to the Adobe Photoshop software and will be
guided in the use of this comprehensive tool to create and optimise design elements, imagery and
photographs for their web sites.
The session will include, amongst others:
Introducing the basic guidelines for using graphic elements on the web
Creating a basic design layout or "look-and-feel" for a web site
Learning how to resize and optimise existing imagery/photographs for use on the web
Creating a collage
Please note:
Session 2 is aimed at beginners. No experience in graphic design is necessary. However, basic
computer skills and comfort within the Windows environment are required.
The design work completed in session 2 can be used in session 3, which starts the following day.
It would therefore be beneficial to those who want to attend session 3 to register for session 2
as well. It is, however, not compulsory to attend both sessions 2 and 3.
Session 3: Developing web sites with Dreamweaver (11 & 12 November 2010) – R2 215
In this session, participants will be guided through the process of web design and the management of
information on a web page. Macromedia Dreamweaver will be used to introduce participants to the
basic principles of web design software and HTML programming. Participants will be able to apply the
skills they have learned in this workshop to web design software of their choice.
The focus will be on the following:
How to plan a web page logically
The layout of aesthetically functional pages with the use of tables, text, colour and graphic
elements
Basic HTML programming codes
Formatting with CSS (cascading style sheets)
The use of templates
How to develop user-friendly information architecture and navigation
Guidelines for the layout and organisation of Internet texts
Please note:
Session 3 is aimed at true novices. No experience in web design or programming is necessary,
but basic computer skills and a working knowledge of the Windows environment are required.
The design work completed in session 2 can be used in session 3. It would therefore be
beneficial to those who want to attend session 3 to register for session 2 as well. It is, however,
not compulsory to attend both sessions 2 and 3.
