Computer Compatibility Requirements
If you would like to access CTools from home, you’ll need a computer with the following features.
Keep in mind:
• You may use either a Windows compatible computer (e.g., Dell, HP, Compaq, IBM, Gateway)
or a Macintosh.
• There are many computers available on campus for you to use if your home computer doesn’t
meet these requirements. If your home computer is too old or your connection is too slow to
easily use CTools, make plans to download readings, upload homework, etc. from campus.
• It is your responsibility to be sure your computer and software are compatible with your
professors’ computers – it’s not their responsibility to convert your files into a usable format.
• “My computer ate my homework” is not a permissible excuse for missing assignments. Be sure
to back up your homework and projects frequently.

How can I tell?
Start your computer. Click on the Start Menu Æ Settings Æ Control Panel.
Double-click the icon for “System.” The first item on the “General” tab will
tell you what your operating system is.
If you can “get on the web” or check your e-mail from your computer, you
should be fine. You can get access through the “Blue Disc” from U-M (for
free dialup access), or MSN, AOL, Juno, Earthlink, etc.
Open your browser. Choose “About Netscape” or “About Internet
Explorer” from the Help Menu. The window that pops up will tell you which
version you are using.
Choose “About Microsoft Word” from the Help Menu. The window that
pops up will tell you which version you are using.
Choose “About Microsoft PowerPoint” from the Help Menu. The window
that pops up will tell you which version you are using. This software isn’t
absolutely essential, but it’s likely you’ll want to use it at some point.
This can be your U-M account, or an account from another vendor, like
Yahoo, Earthlink, MSN, AOL, etc. Important: Microsoft Outlook is
especially prone to viruses; we recommend Eudora
(http://www.eudora.com/download/) or web-based mail or Mulberry (from
U-M – http://mail.umich.edu/ ).
