Why take sociology?
Many of the pleasures and pains you encounter in life result from the fact that you depend
upon others for what you want -- parents, friends, employers, musicians, technicians -the list could go on and on. And if you look beyond yourself to the lives of others you
cannot help but notice that the same is true for them. At the heart of sociology is the fact
of human interdependence. Not only what you want and what you get from others, but
also who you are, what you can do, must do, and how much pleasure and pain comes
your way, all depend upon these relationships of interdependence. Taking sociology can
help you understand the patterns of human interdependence that shape your daily life.
Course Synopsis Sociology is a course where students will examine the basic principles, concepts, and
methods central o the scientific study of sociology. There are 3 goals that we will meet
throughout the course of the semester.
 Goal #1 – To teach students to think like sociologists.
 Goal #2 – To help students develop a sociological imagination. This will enable
them to view their own lives within a larger social and historical context.
 Goal #3 – To help students understand and appreciate the rich diversity that is
possible in social life by exposing them to data from a wide variety of crosscultural and historical sources.

Expectations You are expected to do the following everyday in class:
 Be on time
 Come prepared and ready to work
 Do you work and contribute daily to the class
 Turn off and put away all electronic devices
Materials –
For this course you will need to bring your book EVERYDAY! You also need to bring a
spiral notebook designated for this class only along with pen/pencil and paper.
Grades –
Grades in this class will be based on tests, quizzes, homework, in-class activities and
assignments, and an out of class group project. This is a class where there will frequently
be lectures in which you are expected to take notes. There will also be a comprehensive
final given at the end of the semester. The grading scale for this class is the same as
approved by the board of education.
Make-Up Work and Late Work –
Please make every effort to be in class each day. If you are gone, you have one day to
turn in an assignment for each day you were gone. After that it is considered late. I do not
accept late work.
