Drugs of Abuse Testing
ACL Laboratories Drug Testing is the Substance Abuse Testing division of ACL
Laboratories. Whether your drug testing needs are to comply with Federally
mandated employee drug screening rules, to provide a drug free workplace for
your employees or to monitor your clinical patients in drug treatment programs,
ACL Laboratories has the ability to offer you the services to meet all of your needs.
ACL Laboratories is one of a select group of laboratories nationwide that is
certified by SAMHSA (formerly NIDA) for the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services to perform drug testing on Federal employees.
ACL Laboratories Drug Testing is currently providing drug-testing services to
clients from all over the world. Our professional staff includes certified
Toxicologists, registered Medical Technologists and degreed chemists dedicated
to providing fast, accurate and reliable results.
Quality Assurance
Quality at ACL Laboratories Drug Testing is assured by participation in proficiency
testing programs with the National Laboratory Certification Program (NLCP) and
the College of American Pathologists (CAP). In addition, our lab is subject to
biannual on-site inspections by the NLCP in conjunction with the U.S.
Department of Transportation (DOT). Internal QC procedures at ACL
Laboratories require that each batch of specimens tested include at least 10%
known control samples and 1% blind controls. The DOT also requires that all
certified labs be subject to external blind controls on a regular basis.

Compliance
ACL Laboratories provides fully defensible test results, which comply with all of
the legal requirements of the Federal Drug Free Workplace Act. Since urine
specimens for employment drug testing are potential legal evidence, all handling
is done in accordance with recognized forensic procedures. ACL Laboratories
provides all the supplies needed for the proper collection, packaging and
shipping of specimens. The drug screen kit contains specimen containers; tamper
evident seals and a 5-part Custody and Control form that ensures the validity and
security of the specimen throughout the drug testing process. This form is
initiated at the collection site and is continued for all specimen handling within
our laboratory.

Specimen Collection
ACL Laboratories will coordinate the collection of forensic samples at our
Illinois/Wisconsin hospitals or clinics or at convenient sites nationwide. Our client
assistants counsel collection site staff on a daily basis to ensure that samples are
collected in accordance with appropriate Federal and/or forensic regulations. We
frequently contact collectors to obtain affidavits to correct chain of custody errors
or to report fatal flaws.
Security
After specimens are received at ACL Laboratories, they are opened in the forensic
storage and accessing vault. To ensure sample integrity, the specimens are
examined by specially trained staff that document the condition of the specimen
seals and sign the chain of custody forms. Security is maintained in the SAMHSA
lab by a card-key alarm system designed to restrict access to authorized staff only.
Methodology
The SAMHSA lab employs the most legally defensible methods available. Initial
testing is performed by enzyme immunoassay with confirmation by gas
chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). In the forensic program, our
certifying scientists subject urine samples to an initial test procedure and
confirmation followed by a rigorous validation process before a positive result is
issued. In addition, specimen validity testing is performed to detect adulteration,
substitution or dilution.
Reporting
A variety of data transmission procedures are available to our clients, including
computer interface, on-line printer, fax, E-mail, courier or U.S. mail depending on
client need and volume. Results are reported by ACL Laboratories within 24 hours
for negative tests and 48 hours for positive tests.
Specimen/Record Storage
Positive samples are stored in locked freezers for a minimum of one year.
Negatives are discarded after 24 hours. All of the paper records including chain of
custody documents, worksheets, instrument printouts and reports are maintained
in our secure storage vault for a minimum of two years.

Drug Testing General Information
The Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Substance Abuse and
Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has compiled the following list
of drugs that could affect a screening drug test (for informational use only). If
only an immunoassay screen is performed, the following substances could cause
a presumptive positive result:
Amphetamines (Methamphetamine and Amphetamine)
Prescription medications that contain either d-amphetamine or racemic d,lamphetamine (e.g., equal amounts of d- and l-amphetamine):
Adderall
Durophet
Benzedrine
Obertrol
Dexedrine
Biphetamine
Prescription medication that contains d-methamphetamine:
Desoxyn (Gradumet)
Substances known to metabolize to methamphetamine (and amphetamine):
Benzphetamine (Didrex)
Fencamine
Dimethylamphetamine
Furfenorex
Famprofazone
Selegiline (Deprenyl, Eldepryl)
Substances known to metabolize to amphetamine:
Amphetaminil
Fenproporex (Tegisec)
Clobenzorex (Dinintel, Finedal)
Mefenorex (Pondinil)
Ethylamphetamine
Mesocarb
Fenethylline (Captagon)
Prenylamine
Nonprescription medication that contains l-methamphetamine:
Vicks Inhaler.
Note: Although 100% l-methamphetamine would be expected, there may be a
trace of d-isomer present following Vicks Inhaler use due to a slight amount of dmethamphetamine present as a contaminant.
Cocaine
Prescription medications that contain cocaine:
None

Note: The medical community uses TAC (tetracaine, epinephrine, cocaine) as a
topical preparation prior to various surgical procedures and may use cocaine by
itself as a topical vasoconstrictive anesthetic for various ear, nose, throat, and
bronchoscopy procedure.
Note: Cocaine is structurally unique and does not resemble any of the other
topical analgesics such as Novocain, Xylocaine (lidocaine), benzocaine, etc.
Although these compounds have analgesic properties, there is no structural
similarity to cocaine or its metabolite (benzoylecgonine).
Marijuana (THC)
Prescription medication that contains delta-9-tetrahydronnabinol (THC):
Dronabinol (Marinol)
Note: Marinol may be used for stimulating appetite and preventing weight
loss in patients with a confirmed diagnosis of AIDS and in treating nausea
and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy. Additionally, some
individuals have been permitted by a court order to use THC for the
management of glaucoma or any other substance that might be identified as
or metabolized to THC. There are no other prescription medications that
contain cannabinoids.
Opiates (Heroin, Morphine, Codeine)
Prescription medications that contain morphine:
Astramorph PF
MSIR
Duramorph
MS Contin Tablets
Prescription medications that contain codeine:
Actifed with Codeine Cough Syrup
Phenaphen with Codeine
Codimal PH
Robitussin A-C
Dimetane-DC Cough Syrup
Triaminic Expectorant with Codeine
Emprin with Codeine
Tylenol with Codeine (#1,2,3 or 4)
Fiorinal with Codeine
Tussar-2
Note: The above listing is a representative sampling of prescription medications
that contain codeine or morphine.
Nonprescription products that contain opium (e.g., morphine):

Paregoric
Nonprescription product that contains codeine:
Kaodene with Codeine
Note: The listed nonprescription products are used as
antidiarrheals.Theyaregenerally available over-the-counter-; however,
nonprescription sale is prohibited in some states. Paregoric alone is a Schedule
III drug, but in combination with other substances is a Schedule V over-thecounter product.
Substances that metabolize to morphine:
Heroin
Note: There are a number of synthetic or semisynthetic opiates available
including, but not limited to, hydromorphone (Dilaudid), oxymorphone
(Numorphan), hydrocodone (Hycodan), dihydrocodeine (Paracodin),
oxycodone (Percodan), propoxyphene (Darvon), methadone (Dolophine),
meperidine (Demerol), fentanyl (Sublimaze), pentazocine (Talwin), and
buprenorphine (Buprenex). These drugs do not metabolize to either codeine,
morphine, or 6-acetylmorphine. When a donor presents a prescription for
narcotic analgesic, the MRO should verify that it does not contain codeine or
morphine and, therefore, cannot metabolize to codeine, morphine, or 6acetylmorphine.
Food item that contains morphine:
Poppy seeds
Note: Eating normal dietary amounts of poppy seeds can cause a urine
specimen to test positive for morphine and (possibly) codeine. The
concentration of morphine can be substantial, with usually very low
concentrations or no detectable codeine.

Phencyclidine (PCP)
Prescription medications that contain PCP:
None
Note: There are no legal medical uses of PCP or any other substance that can
be misidentified as PCP.
Drug screen panels and tests are available with the following options:
1. Drug screen panels and tests with order codes beginning with “U” do not
require an accompanying Chain of Custody, nor do they have confirmations
included when screening results are positive. These panels and tests are
designed for medical/clinical purposes.
2. Drug screen panels and tests with order codes beginning with “S” require
collection utilizing Chain of Custody protocol. These panels and tests are
designed for pre-employment and private employment purposes.
3. Drug screen panels and tests with order codes ending with “C” and
specifying Confirmation require collection utilizing Chain of Custody
protocol and include automatic confirmations of positive screening results.
4. NIDA/DOT Panels require collection utilizing Chain of Custody protocol and
must be accompanied by a completed Federal Drug Testing Custody and
Control form. The NIDA/DOT panels require confirmation of positive screen
results by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and are designed
specifically for federally regulated industries.
5. Clients may choose to either have the charges associated with the
confirmation of positive screen results bundled with the panel fees, or
charged as a separate fee.
