Photinia ‘Red Robin’
Photinia ‘Red Robin’ will have you singing from the treetops! This plant has amazing foliage, with beautiful
glossy green older leaves and bright red new growth. The dense growing nature of ‘Red Robin’ makes it perfect
for use as a hedge - plant a whole line and watch you neighbours disappear! White flower heads are also
produced in spring. 'Red Robin' is a very hardy and vigorous plant that can grow up to 30 cm a year, and the
striking foliage makes it a must have!
Genus: Photinia
Species: x fraseri
Growing: A very adaptable plant that is perfect for
Australian conditions, and can tolerate full sun or
partial shade.
Soil: Must be planted in well drained soil and is
suitable for a range of soil types.
Water: The soil should be kept moist, especially in the
hotter months.
Foliage & Flowering Features: The striking red and
green foliage of Photinia ‘Red Robin’ is the plant’s
most obvious feature, providing fantastic colour for
much of the year. Small white flowers form in spring,
adding to the colourful display.
Origin: Eastern and Southern Asia
Uses: Fantastic as a hedging plant, a long line of ‘Red
Robin’ will form an impressive border. They look the
best in mass plantings, particularly when contrasted
against more conventional, green foliage plants.
However, ‘Red Robin’ can be used as an unusual
feature plant, with the red foliage making an interesting
focal point in the garden.
Maintenance: Fertilise in summer with a good slowrelease fertiliser and trim regularly to promote bushy
growth and the red newer foliage.
