Pyrus calleryana "Chanticleer"
COMMON NAME; Chanticleer Callery Pear, Cleveland Select Callery Pear
FAMILY; Rosaceae, sub-family, Pomoideae
ORIGIN; China, Korea, selection of "Chanticleer" made in Ohio and introduced in 1965.
HEIGHT; 10-14mt
WIDTH; 4-5mt
HABIT; Narrowly pyramidal with upright spreading branches and dense foliage-a much narrower form of
ornamental pear than other varieties.
FOLIAGE; Deciduous. Glossy green leaves, which turn a brilliant gold-red to plum in autumn.
FLOWERS; Single white flowers in clusters of 6-10, produced in abundance. Flowers approx. 2-2.5cm
across.
FLOWERING SEASON; Spring.
FRUIT; a small ovoid to globular pome, 1-1.5cm across, dull gold to russet in colour.
CULTURE & USE; Street tree, shade, parks, ornamental, large containers, avenues.
PRUNING; Trees should be pruned while young to develop well-spaced lateral branches along a single
central leader.
COMMENTS; An ideal tree where space is limited both above and below ground. Shallow rooted, tolerant of
most soil types, including alkaline and clay, pest and pollution resistant will also tolerate drought and wet
situations adequately. Less susceptible to wind damage than other ornamental pears.
