With white flowers, summer foliage, russet fall color and winter fruit on peeling grey branches, this tree provides a lot of interest in all seasons. This variety is resistant to powdery mildew and is a strong grower. Pink/Red Dogwood: Cornus florida ‘Cherokee Brave’ This dogwood forms a small deciduous tree with a pyramidal form and low branches. The spring flowers are pink-red and fade to white in the center. Oval, dark green leaves turn bright red in the fall. The fruits persist into the winter as a food source for birds. White Fringe Tree: Chionanthus virginicus The Fringe tree is sometimes better known as Grancy Graybeard in our area, a name which refers to the drooping, fragrant, creamy flower clusters that give the appearance of a bushy “beard.” Fringe tree has no insect or disease problems, and can be grown in clusters or as a specimen tree. It tolerates clay soil and dry conditions once established. Clay to Dry once established Black Gum: Nyssa sylvatica ‘Zydego Twist’ This Black Gum, sometimes referred to as Black Tupelo, features stunning, contorted branches. Its form is amazing, especially after the vivid red fall foliage drops and the branches are revealed, giving it extreme winter interest. It has no natural pests and is salt and wet-site tolerant. American Persimmon: Diospyros virginiana This deciduous tree forms a rounded crown, and is one of the easiest trees to identify because of the thick, grey bark divided into rectangular blocks. The white spring flowers give way to edible, 1-2” fruits that mature to an orange-red and may persist into winter. Fall leaf color is yellow-green-red-purple and quite stunning. Weeping American Persimmon: Diospyros virginiana ‘Magic Fountain’ This tree is an unusual ornamental weeping form of our native persimmon. It bears round 1” yellow fruits that are edible by birds, wildlife and humans. After the reddishyellow autumn leaves fall, the fruit looks like large crabapples hanging into winter. American Hornbeam: Carpinus caroliniana This deciduous understory tree has a pleasant rounded form and features serrated, oval, dark green leaves. It can be grown as a multi-trunk or single-trunk tree having smooth grey bark. The spring flowers form papery catkins that hand at the ends of the branches. Hornbeam is a moderately slow growing tree but very hardy and reliable. Bigleaf Magnolia: Magnolia macrophylla This magnolia is noted for its huge oblong leaves which can reach up to 30” and are the largest simple leaves of any native North American tree. The leaves are green above and silvery-green below. It grows in a pyramidal shape and has fragrant white flowers in the spring. Cone-like pods develop in summer into fruit for birds. Southern Bayberry: Myrica cerifera Also known as Wax Myrtle, its berries were used for making candles in Colonial times. It can be grown as a multi-branched shrub or limbed up into a small tree. This broadleaf evergreen has glossy green leaves and inconspicuous spring flowers followed by the berries which persist through the winter. Myrtles are useful as screening plants or informal hedges. Sweet Bay Magnolia: Magnolia virginiana This magnolia prefers moist soils, and unlike most other magnolias can tolerate extremely wet and boggy soil. Its characteristics are those of most magnolias, with creamy-white, fragrant, cup-shaped blooms, seed pods with bright red fruit, and a semi-evergreen habit. The oval, shiny green leaves are silvery underneath. It has brilliant, long lasting, orange-red fall color, a uniform branching habit and fast growth. This maple thrives in warm climates and will tolerate wet soil with good drainage. SOIL TYPE Average White oak derives its name from its light ash-gray bark, and it matures into a substantial deciduous tree with a wide spreading, rounded crown. The flowers are insignificant but N, FS, W form acorns with warty caps. The variable autumn leaf color ranges from russet to red and orange. Oaks are tough, adaptable, long-lived and tolerant of heat, and the Nuttall Oak goes one step farther in its ability to handle poorly drained and clay soils. This oak grows into an attractive cone form having a strong central leader. It also has the added benefit of dropping the red-maroon autumn leaves completely within a few days. Cherry Laurel: Prunus caroliniana ‘Compacta’ ‘Compacta’ is a cultivar with smaller leaves and a smaller growth habit than traditional laurels. The bright green leaves smell like cherries when crushed, and the fragrant white springtime flowers attract pollinators. Small black fruits are attractive to wildlife and birds. Eastern Redbud: Cercis canadensis ‘Appalachian Red’ Redbud is a deciduous, often multi-trunked, understory tree with a rounded crown and stunning rose-purple spring blooms that appear on bare branches before the leaves. The heart shaped leaves are green during the summer and then become yellow in the fall. This cultivar is a marked by flowers that are redder than others and last a long time. Weeping Redbud: Cercis canadensis ‘Ruby Falls’ A beautiful weeping redbud, it is small in size yet forms a dramatic shape with little pruning. Lavender flowers sprout from red stems and last several weeks in the spring. The heart shaped leaves that form are a maroon color, and remain through the summer until autumn, when they change to dark green with maroon streaks. 80’ (w) 80’ (h) Average N, FS/PS, W 35’ (w) 60’ (h) Average N, FS/PS, B, P, W 8’ (w) 10’ (h) Average N, FS/PS, H, P 35’ (w) 30’ (h) Moist N, FS/PS, H, P 8’ (w) 6’ (h) Average N, FS/PS 40’ (w) 70’ (h) Average to Wet N, FS/PS 30’ (w) 40’ (h) Average N, FS, B 10’ (w) 25’ (h) Bald Cypress: Taxodium districhum This long lived, pyramidal conifer can grow quite tall. Although it looks like a needled evergreen, it is deciduous, hence its name “bald.” Although in its habitat it is often found in wet and swampy areas, in cultivation it grows well in upland, drier areas. Soft, feathery green needles turn orange-russet in the fall. By summer 1” cones appear. River Birch: Betula nigra ‘Dura Heat’ River birch is a fast growing, medium sized, deciduous tree that can be grown either as a multi trunked or single trunked tree. Pale cream bark exfoliates in papery layers to reveal lighter inner bark. Oval, green serrated leaves will turn yellow in the fall, and catkins droop and sway in the breeze. Red Cedar: Juniperus virginiana ‘Burkii’ If you need a columnar tree to mass together as either a fence or a windbreak, try the red cedar. As a substitute for other overused conifers, the evergreen cedar is very tolerant of dry and hot conditions. The dense branches have shiny, bluish-green foliage which becomes tinged with purple in autumn and winter. Average This rounded, vase-shaped tree is prized for the massive 8” clusters of white “snowball” flowers it produces each spring. The flowers emerge pale green in the spring but quickly turn to white. The oval leaves are glossy and remain on the tree in our area, which gives it the distinction of being semi-evergreen. $50.00 15 Gallon $110.00 T16-11-7G 15 Gallon ITEM # T16-12-15G 15 Gallon ITEM # T16-13-15G 7 Gallon ITEM # T16-14-7G 10 Gallon ITEM # T16-15-10G 15 Gallon ITEM # T16-16-15G 15 Gallon ITEM # T16-17-15G 15 Gallon ITEM # T16-18-15G FS/PS, P 15’ (w) 15’ (h) Average $100.00 $100.00 $50.00 $80.00 $130.00 $100.00 $110.00 7 Gallon $50.00 15 Gallon $110.00 7 Gallon $45.00 15 Gallon $110.00 T16-19-7G T16-19-15G Snowball Viburnum: Viburnum macrocephalum PRICE 7 Gallon T16-11-15G White Oak: Quercus alba Nuttall Oak: Quercus nutalii CONTAINER T16-20-7G T16-20-15G Inventory selection continued on Page 1, order form Page 3.
