Canna var.: Phasion
Canna phaison
‘Tropicanna’®
®
Tropicanna flowers are bright orange/gold – from summer to late autumn.
Each leaf is different – an exotic combination of vivid colours. New foliage emerges in rich burgundy tones – which quickly
develop flamboyant stripes of red, pink, yellow and deep green fanning out from the vivid green central vein.
This multi-hued display creates a plant where every leaf is different – more of one colour, less of others. When backed by
the sunlight the translucent leaves shimmer..
In pots grows to around 1.2 to 1.5 metres in height. (If plants are too tall, cut back to force new growth).
In the garden grows to 1.2 metres in the first year. Second year plants left in the ground can grow to 2 metres.
Dividing and replanting annually will keep compact.
In gardens can be planted out in full sun or partial shade. Plants in partial shade – only 4 hours of afternoon sun,
performed as well as plants in full sun. Shelter from strong winds.
On patios select a larger pot or tub 30 to 50 cm diameter. Place in sunny, warm location. Keep well watered.
Indoor locate near a window that provides natural light and some sun. Water regularly. During winter keep indoor
temperature above 15° C and growth will continue.
All Cannas are natives of Tropical and Sub-tropical America. The first major breeding and selection of Canna for garden
situations, to increase flower size and the range of colours was undertaken by the father of plant breeding, Luther Burbank
in his fields and laboratories at Santa Rosa in California, about 100 miles north of San Francisco.
