shrub - evergreen
3 - 4' high, 6'+ wide.
Low-arching or trailing wine-colored stems.
Shiny, dark green, leathery leaves; very fragrant when crushed.
Insignificant maroon flowers - February to April.
Red berries.
Native habitat: coastal sage scrub; bluffs and moist canyons Santa Catalina Island and Baja California.
Sun (on coast) to part shade (coast or inland) to shade.
Frost resistant.
Will tolerate heavy and clay soils if site is well drained.
Water 1 - 2 x / month once established.
Good groundcover under oaks and other dry shady places.
Useful in dried flower arrangements.

(Rare, threatened or endangered in California and elsewhere.
Fairly endangered in California).
