Unit #2 Populations
# of Days: 15
Key Concept(s)
 Bio Diversity
 Extinction
Standards/Elements
SEV5 Students will recognize that human beings are part of the global ecosystem and will evaluate
the effects of human activities and technology on ecosystems.
a. Describe factors affecting population growth of all organisms, including humans. Relate these to factors
affecting growth rates and carrying capacity of the environment.
c. Explain how human activities affect global and local sustainability.
d. Describe the actual and potential effects of habitat destruction, erosion, and depletion of soil fertility
associated with human activities.
f. Describe how political, legal, social, and economic decisions may affect global and local ecosystems.
Unit Essential Questions
1. How are humans increasing the rate of extinction, and what measures are humans taking to
protect the biodiversity of the biosphere?
2. What must be done to ensure a sustainable environment for future generations
Content
 The factors that effect the balance of nature
 The factors that lead to extinction and reduction of species
 The factors that lead to species extinction in their local community
Key Terms/Vocabulary – “Language of the Standard/Elements”
Biodiversity, endangered species, Endangered Species Act, exotic species, poaching, threatened species,
Environmental Impact Statement
Skills
 Collect data
 Relate data to real life problems
 Do research
 Use technology
 Identify and report on endangered species
Assessment(s)
Students will get to choose an endangered species off the current endangered species list. They will need
to create a brochure about their organism. The required information they must include is found on the
rubric. This counts as one-half of their grade. The other half of their grade comes from the quality of the
product they submit. Both of these rubrics are found at the end of this unit.
Quizzes:
Vocabulary, Word problems
Guided practice:
practice word problems, review worksheets
Test:
multiple choice, cloze passages, essay
Lab reports:
Lab report on an endangered species
