Arrow Point

Kaieteur Falls
Kaieteur Falls is the world’s largest single drop waterfall. It is located on the Potaro River in the Kaieteur
National Park, a protected area. Kaieteur Falls is 226 meters (741 feet) from its plunge over a sandstone
cliff to the first break. The Waterfall is an amazing sight to behold and the National Park is home to
beautiful creatures such as the Guiana Cock of the Rockand the Golden frog.

City (Georgetown) Tour
Georgetown was established in 1842 and reflects the influences of its Dutch, British and French colonial
past. This heritage is seen through its structures, architecture, museums, gardens and place names. Laid
out on land that formerly supported plantations, the city has a gridded appearance with the vast
majority of its streets crossing at right angles. Developed south along the eastern bank of the Demarara
River and east along the coast of the country, the city covers an area of approximately 97 sq km.
The tour visits the seawalls, Botanical Gardens, St Georges’ Cathedral and other significant features in
the city.

Mangrove Reserve/Mangrove Heritage Travel Trail Tour
Mangroves are integral to the sea defences of Guyana. Naturally occurring, the mangrove forests on the
coast became depleted through human activity – harvesting of the mangroves for various activities thus
denuding the landscape. With climate change and rising sea levels a real threat to the continued
existence of Guyana’s coast the mangroves have been re-planted and a mangrove reserve established.
In addition mangroves provide a habitat for numerous species including birds, fish and crustaceans. The
tour includes the Mangrove Visitor Centre, the mangrove Reserve and a brief history of Victoria Village.

Mahaica River Birding Tours
This tour involves a boat journey up the Mahaica River which is bordered on either side by intact
mangrove forests, and is home to crabs, racoons, monkeys and over 150 species of birds. Some of the
most sighted species of birds include the Gray-breasted Crakes, Wing-barred Seedeater, Point-tailed
Palmcreeper, Moriche Oriole, Rufous Crab-Hawk, Black Hawk-Eagle, Boat-billed Heron, Pied WaterTyrant, Tropical Kingbird, Green-rumpedParrotlet, Great Black-Hawk and the national bird of Guyana,
the Hoatzin.

Bird-watching
Guyana has over 815 migrant and resident bird species for birders to enjoy. They range from parrots,
toucans, the harpy eagle, Guiana Cock-of-the-Rock, Blood-Coloured Woodpecker, Crimson Fruit crow,
and the Elusive Rufus-Winged Ground-Cuckoo. In the capital city, Georgetown, a wide range of parrots
and other species can be seen at a number of sites, including the National Park, Promenade Gardens,
Botanical Gardens and the Georgetown Seawall.

Iwokrama Forest
The Iwokrama International Centre (IIC) was established in 1996 under a joint mandate from the
Government of Guyana and the Commonwealth Secretariat to manage the Iwokrama forest“ in a
manner that will lead to lasting ecological, economic and social benefits to the people of Guyana and to
the world in general”. The Iwokrama forest is a protected area consisting of 371,000 hectares of rain
forest.
