Mangrove forests are made up of mangrove trees which are salt tolerant,
evergreen plants.
Mangroves provide protected nurseries for fishes, crustaceans and shellfish;
food for marine life and humans; and refuge for many species of birds. This
makes up an unique ecosystem where the land and the sea meet.
Despite its endless list of important values, mangrove forests have shrunk
dramatically around the World due to human activities.
Seychelles is no exception, mangrove forests around the granitic islands have
been mostly destroyed for development.
Mangroves are also useful in reducing the damage caused by extreme weather
events and climate change impacts.

Seychelles mangroves forests are home to many species of birds, fish, and
shellfish.
Aldabra atoll, one of the largest mangrove areas in the Seychelles, is the
only breeding location for the great frigatebird and lesser frigatebird
in the country.
There are seven species of mangroves in Seychelles, which can all be
found in Port Launay Wetlands, on the west coast of Mahé.
All these species depend on mangroves for their survival.
