COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

RESPONSIBLE TO:
SPORT AND LEISURE MANAGER
MAIN PURPOSE OF POST
1. To provide a comprehensive and responsive marketing and communication
service for the Sport and Leisure Team.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. To develop an annual Sport and Leisure Marketing Plan with the Service Team.
2. To monitor the Sport and Leisure market environment and competition.
3. To develop campaigns and promotions to engage with the priority groups
identified in the Sport and Leisure Marketing Plan.
4. To give proactive advice and guidance on publicity and communication issues
that relate to sport and leisure services.
5. To provide editorial and proof-reading services for Sport and Leisure Team Lead
Officers.
6. To play a key role in developing and reviewing internal communication, including
organising the production and distribution of an Internal Staff Newsletter and
other employee briefings on new promotions and activities.

Coordinating Marketing performance planning and review arrangements.
8. To identify and develop all available channels for marketing sport and Leisure
services to targeted audiences, including use of digital and social media
9. To use and develop databases as a tool to market leisure services
10. To use lifestyle data such as MOSAIC and ACORN to help identify key
stakeholder audiences
11. To use Sport England segmentation tools and data to identify and communicate
with targeted audiences.
12. To comply with Data Protection legislation and co-ordinate DPA and FOI
enquiries for leisure.
13. Research, write and issue Sport and Leisure media releases, briefings, feature
articles and case studies.
14. Provide advice and assistance to the Corporate Marketing and Communications
Officer on Sport and Leisure matters, including responding to media enquiries as
requested
15. Contribute to the development of corporate communication strategies and to
policy reviews.
16. Develop and maintain effective media contacts and build the Sport and Leisure
service profile.
17. Monitor and analyse media coverage
18. Co-ordinate photographic coverage in support of the functions of the post.
19. Maintain and develop marketing resources on the Council’s website and intranet
in consultation with Lead Officers
20. Recognise and report opportunities and issues of interest to Members and Lead
Officers.
21. Develop effective links with Elected Members, internal departments, community
groups and residents
22. Attend and present information to Sport and Leisure Teams as required.
23. Ensure continuous improvement in the Council’s approach to, and delivery of
communications activity, in particular through innovation, best practice and the
development of new initiatives.
24. Assist in the training and development of new members of staff as required.
25. Undertake CPD and other training as required.
SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE POST
Flexible approach to time of work, with ability to work evenings and weekends as
required by the needs of the service.
You may be required to carry out those duties at your present workplace or at
another Council venue.

1. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications

3. Knowledge of local government organisations
4. Project management
5. Importance of corporate identity and branding
6. E-communications:
7. Microsoft packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
8. Intranet and website authoring and development
9. Understanding of ‘new media’
10. 12 months working in a marketing and communications, marketing or public
relations role
11. Development of marketing communications
12. Researching and communicating news and publicity information
13. Using digital marketing and communications to build stakeholder engagement
(including website and social media)
14. Developing targets / monitoring & evaluation of marketing and communications
activity
15. Working with partner organisations to deliver shared priorities and objectives
16. Quantitative and qualitative research
