Quiet Correction
If a child (or adult) is doing/saying
something that you don’t agree with
you need to do two things:
1. Ask yourself (silently), “Why do I
disagree?” and then sort out in
your head what causes you concern.
2. If you feel it needs correction then
quietly get alongside the person
and ask them to stop and if
appropriate, talk it through with
them. Your quiet correction will
generally have a much greater
impact than a public humiliation.

Lesson 3
the story
It’s not uncommon in the New Testament to read about pairs or small groups working together. However a
husband and wife team is a little more unique. Yet Priscilla and Aquila are mentioned a number of times as
a couple ministering together.
Aquila and Priscilla, a Jewish couple, came originally from Italy and were now living in Pontus (Acts 18:2). Paul
originally met Aquila in Corinth and then went on to meet both of them at their home where they shared the
profession of being tent-makers. It would appear that Paul stayed quite a while and worked with them.
Priscilla and Aquila joined Paul on his third missionary journey, which would take them to Ephesus (Acts 18:18-19).
Here they stayed to help the influential Apollos to grow in his faith (Acts 18:24-26). Apollos, a Jew from
Alexandria (Acts 18:24), came to Ephesus. With his combined knowledge of the story of Jesus and his gift
of public speaking, he was very enthusiastic in proclaiming the truth as he knew it (Acts 18:25).
Inviting Apollos to their home, they nurtured him into a deeper understanding of the way of God, in particular,
explaining that there was more than just the baptism of John.
As a result, he grew in his eloquence of speech and deep knowledge and understanding of the Scriptures
which was definitely a great gift used by God.
Paul is definitely grateful for their support, as too are the other churches that they support (Romans 16:3-4).

Tower Team Challenge (3-5min)
Place the blocks on one side of the room and a space to build as far away as possible.
Choose several children to build a tower of blocks on their own and several others to build their tower
in a team.
Explain that each person can only carry one block at a time.
Give the children one minute to build a tower as high as they can. (See Power Tools ‘Games’ for more detail)
Ask: Was it easier to complete the task on your own or in a team?

 Can You Play? (1-2min)
Say: Raise your hand if you can play soccer by yourself.
Repeat with several other sports/games (e.g. tennis, hide and seek).
Say: There are some things that are better to do with a team.
 Sing (3-4min)
Sing ‘Everybody Sing’ (CD Track 2).

Teamwork is Better (7-8min)
Use story telling pictures 4, 21-26 or Power Point L3 and outline.
Say: Paul was the leader of the early church. There were some things that he did on his own, but there
were other things that he did with a team.
Draw three pictures on the board (or ask a child to), a tent, a boat and scrolls (or use story telling pics 21-23).
Say: Paul could do lots of things – he knew about God’s law and he was very good at teaching people
about following Jesus. Paul also made tents! It was the job he did to get enough money so he could spend
his time serving God. One day, Paul met a man named Aquila and his wife Priscilla. They were also followers
of Jesus and they made tents too. So Aquila, Priscilla and Paul made tents together (point to tent drawing).
A little while later, Paul decided to sail to another city to speak to people about God.
Ask: Do you think he went on his own?
Say: No, this time Paul sailed with his friends, Priscilla and Aquila. So Paul made tents with his team
and went sailing in a team.
While Aquila and Priscilla were in town, they met a man named Apollos. Apollos was a great follower
of Jesus and loved to teach about Jesus. He knew a lot about God, but not everything, so Priscilla and
Aquila invited him back to their house and taught him what they knew (point to picture of the scrolls).
So Priscilla, Aquila and Apollos also worked as a team to learn more about God.
Say: Working in a team is a great way to serve God. We can help each other out and all play an
important part. It is a bit like when children work together to clean a room. The tall people can reach
the high places, the smaller kids can reach low places. Everyone can work together using our skills!

Say: Today we are going to hear about how people in the early church worked in teams. You can help
act out the lesson.
Use story telling pictures 4, 21-26 or Power Point L3 and outline to illustrate the story.
Say: We know that Paul was a leader in the early church, but he also made tents. One day, Paul met a
couple named Priscilla and Aquila, and guess what? They made tents too! So Paul, Priscilla and Aquila
all worked together making tents.
Ask children to pretend to make tents together.
Continue: After a while, Paul wanted to travel to another city to tell people about God. Priscilla and
Aquila were followers of Jesus too, so they decided to all sail together.
Ask children to pretend to sail on a boat together.
Say: After a while, Paul had to say goodbye to Priscilla and Aquila. It wasn’t long, though before they met another
man who loved Jesus. His name was Apollos. Apollos loved teaching people about Jesus, but he didn’t know all
there was to know. So Priscilla and Aquila invited him to their house and they shared what they knew about Jesus.
Instruct the children to pretend to be talking about Jesus.
Say: In the early church, people worked in teams in lots of ways – making tents together, sailing
together and learning together. We can do lots of things together too. We can learn together in
scripture, we can help each other in the playground and we can play together in sports.
Ask Can you think of other things we can do together? (Accept responses)
Say working in a team can be great!

Prayer (2-3min)
Say: Paul and his friends worked together making tents, they travelled together on a boat and they
talked about God together. Do you think they prayed together?
Ask them to respond without speaking by signing a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ (using their hands closed like a ball).
Say: I’m sure they did. Let’s pray together now.
Lead the children in prayer for any needs they may have.
Music and Song (4-5min)
Play some worship music that is one instrument and some that involves a band or orchestra and ask
children which they prefer.
Then sing the unit song, ‘Live Humbly Trusting God’ (CD Track 3).

it happen: Restaurant (cooks, waiters, manager), hospitals (doctors, nurses, managers, cleaners, etc),
school, (principal, teachers, administration staff).
Say: Lots of places rely on people working in teams to get things done.

Teamwork (6-7min)
Say: Sarah loved to sing. She would sing in the shower, listen to her mp3 player while walking to school
and her parents were always asking her to turn the music down.
One day, Sarah decided she really wanted to take part in the school talent quest. She wanted to do
what she was good at. There was just one problem – Sarah needed music to sing to!
Ask: What do you think she could do?
Continue: Sarah thought about it for a while. She could use her mp3 player, but it didn’t sound as
good as live music, and she thought she might feel shy being on her own. Finally, she spoke to her best
friend, Carissa.
Carissa had great advice. “Why don’t you find some other people at school to sing with?” Sarah was
surprised – why hadn’t she thought of that before? The very next day, she went around and found four
other people who wanted to sing with her. She even found that one of the Year 6 students would play
guitar for them. The group practiced before school and it sounded great. All the other kids loved it and
Sarah realised how great it is to work in a team.
Say: Working in a team is another way we can serve God. Paul, the leader of the early church knew
that. He worked with several people in a team.
Read Acts 18:1-4.
Say: He made tents and sailed to other cities with a couple called Priscilla and Aquila. Priscilla and
Aquila then worked with a man called Apollos to learn more about God so that they could teach others.
Working in a team is a great way to serve God.

Paul’s Ministry (2-3min)
Remind children that they have been learning about the early church, with Paul as one of it’s leaders.
Brainstorm what they already know about Paul’s ministry.
Add that Paul travelled to many places and that he made tents to support his work for the church.
 Community Teams (3-5min)
Invite children to share any teams they are part of (sporting, debating, etc) and the part they play in
their team. Be prepared to share your own experience of being on a team.
Word Find (5-7min)
Write the word ‘Corinthians’ on the board and give each child a piece of paper.
Give the children 1 min to make as many small words as possible from ‘Corinthians’.
Find the highest number of words found and write on the board.
Repeat the task, this time working in teams. Find out the highest number.

Write ‘Aquila, Priscilla, Apollos, Paul’ on the board, as well as the Bible references, Acts 18:1-3, 18-21, 24-28.
Give the groups 4-5 minutes to read the passage and find out as much as they can about these people
and write them down.
Ask groups to share what they have learnt.
Say: These passages don’t tell us too much about these people, but they do make it clear that they worked
as a team in different situations in order to serve God. Working well as a team is a great way to do many
things and many people today work in teams.
Brainstorm ways that people work in teams today. (Accept responses)
 Kids Can (2-3min)
Say: Acts Chapter 18 tells us about how Paul and several of his friends worked well as a team to serve God.
We know that kids can serve God too and serving in a team is a great way to do it. For example, one brother
and sister, who were 9 and 7 years old, got together and held a market stall. They collected all their old toys
and took them along to a church market. They sold them and gave all the money to an organisation that
supports children overseas. Another group of children joined in the local ‘Clean Up Australia’ day working
bee. They worked with other adults to help clean up their community.
Invite children to share their own experiences of working in a team.
