Chromosome- Packaged DNA in the nucleus
Chromatin- Threadlike coils of chromosomes
Sister chromatids- paired chromosomes
Centromere- Spot where sister chromatids join
Spindle- mesh like web or bridge which form from
the centrioles
Centrioles- organelle in animal cells which aid in cell
division
Why do cells divide?
 Cell
gets too big
 Organisms grow
 Cells get old and need to be replaced
2 Stages to cell Division:
 Stage
1: Interphase
 Stage 2: Mitosis
Stage 1: Interphase
 In
between mitosis
 Cells grow, carry out regular
functions.
Stage 2: Mitosis
 Four
Stages:
–Prophase (pro- means first)
–Metaphase (meta- means middle/after)
–Anaphase (ana- means apart)
–Telophase (telo- means far away/end)
Prophase
 Paired
chromatids
 Chromatin condenses into
chromosomes
 Centrioles move to opposite
ends
Chromosomes
condensing
Prophase
Metaphase
 Chromatids
line up in
the Middle of the cell
 Spindle fibers attach to
centromeres
Anaphase
Sister chromatids move
Apart
 Spindle fibers pull
chromatids to opposite ends
of cell

Anaphase
Telophase
 Two
nuclei are now
formed
Telophase
Cytokinesis
 Cytoplasm
splits
