Lessons Learned
• Both the Dean campaign and the MMM
combined the “Living Web” and “old
school” media and publicity methods.
• Even with the best tools, we can’t
eliminate the human factor
Suggestions for creating a social
network
• Make it easy to contribute thoughts/ideas
– Minimal barriers to entry
• Organize all your publishing (content)
across multiple media channels
– RSS
• Use blogs externally and internally
– Internal: Knowledge blogs
• Listen to your users
Decentralization vs. Hierarchy
• We are seeing the emergence of new form
of laterally organized, network-driven
groups
• This represents a challenge to the
hierarchical, corporate style organizations
Questions for discussion

the use of these technologies to create
social networks?
• Are any of you members of an online
community?
• Can anyone think how the Katrina effort
used the internet and web technologies?
