WE WILL
NOW COUNT
DOWN OUR
TOP TEN
INVENTIONS!
NUMBER
TEN
Transistor
• We would not have
computers in our houses
without the transistor
because they would be too
BIG!
• Without transistors we
would have to plug in all of
our radios.
• Transistors were invented
in 1947 at Bell Labs.

Shelter
• Early man who
lived 1,000,000
years ago made
nests in trees,
fields, and
sometimes in
caves.
• Whenever they
started farming
they built more
permanent
shelters.

Computer
• Computers store great
amounts of information.
• We can talk long distances
by using e-mail.
• The first computer that was
electronic and fully –
programmable was invented
in 1941, by Konrad Zuse.

Printing Press
• The printing press was invented by German
Johannes Gutenberg in the 1440’s.
• It allowed us to print things like books without
having to write it if we wanted a copy.
• Without it, not very many people could go to
school, so a lot of us would not be very
educated as we are now.
• Other people in Europe claimed to have
invented the printing press, but Gutenberg got
the most credit by scholars.

Transportation
• Transportation helps people
and products get from one
place to another.
• Karl Benz invented the 1st
gasoline powered threewheeled car in 1885 in
Germany. It crashed going two
miles per hour when the driver
lost control and hit a wall.
• Gottlieb Daimler invented a 4wheeled car that same year.

Alternating Current
• Nicola Tesla invented
alternating current and then
sold his idea to Westinghouse
in 1885.
• Thomas Edison thought direct
current would be better, but
Tesla’s idea is what we use
today.
• We are glad that Nicola
Tesla invented alternating
current so that we can plug in
to electricity in our houses.

•The wheel was invented about 5000
B.C.
•The first wheel was found in
Mesopotamia, but no one knows who
really invented it.
•The first wheels were probably made
out of logs. Before wheels people
used wedges to move heavy things.

Agriculture
• Agriculture was probably
developed in South Asia and
Egypt.
• It is believed to date from
9000-7000 B.C.
• Early man grew crops such
as wild barley, beans, water
chestnuts, and pumpkins.
• Agriculture is important
because without it, we
would have to look for food.

Medicine
• Long ago plants were
used as medicine. Aloe
was used to heal burns,
willow bark was chewed
to relieve pain, and
yucca was used to make
soap.
• Penicillin was
accidentally invented by
Robert Fleming in 1928
when he noticed that
mold killed bacteria.
• Without medicine people
could get very ill.

LANGUAGE
Language
•Nobody really knows by
whom, when, or where
language was invented.
•It has been around since
at least 40,000 B.C.
•Without it we couldn’t
understand each other.
