Resources
The Dynamic Earth The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History has
a multimedia web site that addresses the topics of gems and minerals, rocks and
mining, and plate tectonics.
Topic 1 Minerals
Internetconnect Topic 1
Rocks and Minerals Detectives Webquest Students use the Internet to collect
clues about rocks and minerals and how they are used. Information is presented
in a multimedia presentation
Wikipedia List of Minerals
Topic 2 Rocks and the Rock Cycle
Internetconnect Topic 2
Wikipedia List of Rock Types
Rock Classification
This ExploreLearning Gizmo allows the user to classify virtual rock samples
based on their appearance according to the common characteristics of igneous,
sedimentary, and metamorphic rock. The rocks may also be classified by their
source in nature. Feedback is provided and data may be recorded via screen
captures. The resource also includes an exploration guide and assessment
questions.
Rock Cycle
This ExploreLearning Gizmo allows the user to explore how rock can transition
from one type to another through the rock cycle. The cycle components include
magma, sediments, soil, and intrusive igneous rock. Crystallization, exposure
and weathering, increased temperature and pressure, melting, consolidation, and
lithification and compaction are the geological processes featured in the
simulation. The user selects a starting location and follows many possible paths
through the cycle. The resource also includes an exploration guide and
assessment questions.
Interactive Rock Cycle Animation
Virtual Rock Walk Take a virtual rock walk of downtown Edmonton. This
Powerpoint show will assist you in learning more about the rocks and minerals
used to build many of the buildings in Edmonton. Use the handout for additional
information.
Rock Hounds (Discover how rocks are formed) animations demonstrate how the
three different kinds of rocks are formed.

Topic 3 Erosion
Internetconnect Topic 3
Topic 4 The Moving Crust
Internetconnect Topic 4
Tectonics Boundaries Students identify and explain the tectonic
processes occurring at divergent, convergent and transform boundaries. Apply
different tectonic forces to plate boundaries. Compare the effects when plates
collide, separate, or slide past each other. Investigate the causes of earthquakes,
tsunamis and volcanoes.
Savage Earth Online An excellent website maintained by PBS on volcanism,
earthquakes, plate tectonics and earth structure.
Geology: Plate Tectonics This exhibit explains the history of our new
understanding of the Earth and provides a brief overview of the theories behind
it.
Plate Tectonics and Continental Drift Learn what tectonic plates are and how
continents move.

2Learn.ca Special Edition Earthquakes
The Virtual Earthquake Virtual Earthquake is an interactive Web-based program
designed to introduce you to the concepts of how an earthquake EPICENTER is
located and how the RICHTER MAGNITUDE of an earthquake is determined.
Earthquakes Canada Recent earthquakes and earthquake information from
Geological Survey of Canada.
Choosing a New Home: In Earthquake Country (TLT) Students research and
create a PowerPoint presentation of earthquakes on the Pacific Ring of Fire, their
severity, choosing a place to live on the Pacific Ring of Fire, earthquake proofing
a home and predict the next major earthquake.
Earthquakes for Kids A comprehensive treatment of the study of earthquakes
provided by the USGS. Links to current world earthquake information. Stuff for
Teachers too!
Earthquake Facts and Follies
Nature's Fury: Earthquakes A multi-media presentation from National Geographic
that includes photos, video, and little-known facts that shake up your ideas about
surviving an earthquake.

Topic 7 Mountains
Internetconnect Topic 7
Rocky Mountain System What caused the formation of the Rocky Mountains?
The USGS provides a detailed description of the forces that caused the
development of this mountain range.
Topic 8 Fossils
Internetconnect Topic 8
Cretaceous Crime Scene
Jurassic Park: The Webquest Your task is to write a memo recommending the
five best sites about a dinosaur featured in the movie. You will need to explain
why you believe those are the most reliable sites from a scientific point of view.
Dig This! The Cretaceous Period Explore for fossils and uncrate the
Cretaceous Period then move on to play Paleo Pursuit.
Fossil Fun - Skeleton Jigsaws : The aim of the game is to construct the skeleton
of a beast, in the fastest time possible. Four levels of difficulty.

Life Has A History Life has changed a lot during Earth's long history. In this tour,
you will learn how and why these changes have occurred.
Adventures At Dry Creek You are about to embark on an adventure to Montana
where YOU are the paleontologist!
Getting Into the Fossil Record The purpose of Getting Into the Fossil Record is
for students to gain a basic understanding of what a fossil is and the factors
involved in becoming part of the fossil record. Try Level 1.
