Factors that influence the climate of a region
1. Elevation or altitude - The higher the elevation, the colder the climate. Less
dense air cannot hold heat, while more dense air can hold heat.
2. Distance from an ocean or large body of water - Moderates the
temperature, less extreme heat and cold. Water is “thermal mass” and holds
heat
3. Latitude, distance from the equator - The greater the latitude, the less
direct are the sun’s rays on the surface. This is why the Equator tends to be
hotter and the poles tend to be colder.
4. Topography, the shape of the land - Flat lands allow rain and wind to move
across it, while mountains tend to block wind and rain.
5. Prevailing winds - Strong or consistent onshore winds tend to bring rain,
offshore winds tend to dry out the land.
6. Ocean currents - Cold currents tend to cool nearby land, warm currents
tend to heat it. Also, warm oceans tend to have larger storms that bring rain
and winds to inland areas.
