Freestyle Theatre Registration
2017 NC Thespian Festival
In order to allow more schools to perform one-act plays on Saturday, we are pleased to offer
Freestyle Theatre as an option. Eligible plays, stand-up comedy, or performing arts pieces, are
10 to 30 minutes in length and have minimal to no technical needs. They may be student-written
works or published plays. Performances in 2017 will be in The Greensboro Cultural Arts Center in
The Stephen D. Hyers Blackbox Theatre. Schools may register for either the One-Act Showcase
or Freestyle Theatre, or both.

Freestyle Theatre will begin as early as 1:00 p.m. on March 24th and end by 5:30 p.m.
If your troupe will not arrive in time for the start of the festival, what arrival time do you
anticipate?
RULES:
 All performers and crew members must be registered delegates at the 2016 NC Thespian
Festival.
 Freestyle Theatre is for one-acts with minimal or no technical requirements.
 Lights will be up and down only.
 Sound cues may be played from the side on a CD player.
 Actors may change into and out of costumes in the restrooms.
 Plays that require only benches, boxes, chairs, etc., are ideal.
 Performances will be stopped if they run more than 3 minutes over the run time stated
above. The maximum run time is 30 minutes from clear playing area to clear playing
area.
 No food or drink is allowed in Stephen D. Hyers Theatre.
 No prop which may be construed to be a weapon may be used. No armed stage combat of
any type is allowed in Freestyle Theatre, as space does not allow safe use.
 Performance pieces that break the rules about food, weapons, or time length will be
automatically be stopped.
Troupe Director, initial to the right if your troupe plans to attend the
International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska, June 2017 and
would like to perform in the Freestyle Theatre venue.
