City state
 Consisted of a city and all the countryside around it
 Amount of countryside controlled by city state depended on its military strength
In Sumer, city-states fought each other to gain more farmland, this resulted in
 strong armies
 strong thick walls around their cities for protection
Akkadians and the Sumerians
 lived in peace for many years
Sargon
 sought to extend the Akkadian territory
 first ruler to have a permanent army
 established the world’s first empire
Empire
 land with different territories and peoples under a single rule
Polytheism
 the worship of many gods
Sumerians
 believed that success in every area of life depended on pleasing the gods
 every Sumerian had a duty to serve and worship the gods
Priests
 people who performed religious ceremonies
 Sumerians relied on them to help gain the god’s favors
