Communicable/Infectious Disease
Management of common communicable diseases shall be in accordance with Colorado
Department of Health guidelines. A student who exhibits symptoms of a readily
communicable disease may be temporarily excused from school attendance.
CSDB recognizes that communicable diseases range from common childhood illnesses, acute
and short term in nature, to chronic, life-threatening diseases such as human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV/AIDS) infection. CSDB will rely on the advice of the medical
community in assessing the risk of transmission of various communicable diseases to
determine how best to protect the health of both students and staff.
Admission to school may be denied to any student diagnosed as having a disease whereby
his/her attendance could be harmful to the welfare of other persons. This would include any
disease, infectious condition, or illness which may reasonably be considered to pose an
unacceptable risk of being communicated to others. Parents are requested to notify the
appropriate principal if their child contracts a communicable disease, infectious condition, or
illness and to keep any child temporarily affected thereby out of school until the condition is
no longer communicable or until he or she has fully recovered. Although HIV/AIDS
infection is a communicable disease, it is not transmitted casually. Therefore it is not, in and
of itself, a reason to deny a student admission to school or to remove a student from school.
Students who become ill at school will be referred to the school nurse and may be sent home
by a school administrator as soon as the parent or person designated as the student’s
emergency contact has been notified.
When information is received by a CSDB staff member that a student has a readily
communicable disease, the staff member shall promptly notify the school nurse or a school
administrator to determine appropriate measures to protect student and staff health and safety.
The school administrator, after consultation with Student Health Services, will determine
which additional staff members, if any, need to know of the student’s condition.
Parents of other children attending the school may be notified by the appropriate school
administrator that their child has been exposed to a communicable disease without
identifying the student who has the disease.
CSDB reserves the right to require a physician’s statement authorizing the student’s return to
school.
In all proceedings related to this policy, CSDB will respect the student’s right to privacy and
shall ensure the confidentiality of all medical information. Any CSDB staff member who
violates confidentiality shall be subject to appropriate disciplinary measures.
