Background
 Born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1885
 Interested in physics at a young age
 Earned a doctorate in physics from
Copenhagen university in 1911
Interest in atoms
 Became interested in Max Planck’s quantum
theory while studying the electron theory of
metals
 In 1912 while working for J.J Thompson, Bohr
was introduced to Ernest Rutherford
 Rutherford development of an atomic model
sparked Bohr’s interest in studying the atom
Bohr’s atomic model
 Shows the atom as a small, positively
charged nucleus surrounded by orbiting
electrons
 First model to highlight electrons travel in
separate orbits
 This explained why atoms omitted light in
fixed wavelengths
 Element 107 bohrium (Bh) is named after him

Bohr’s atomic model
 Suggested atoms can only have classical
motions
 Orbits are associated with definite energy or
energy levels
 Said that electrons can only gain or lose
energy by transferring to an allowed energy
level


 Applied to Rutherford’s atomic structure
saying electrons travel in stationary orbit
