ROME BECOMES AN EMPIRE
 Caesar’s
murder plunged
Rome into a period of civil
war that lasted for about 10
years
 When
the fighting ended,
Octavian Caesar, Caesar’s
adopted son, was the person
who controlled the most
power in Rome
OCTAVIAN VS. MARC ANTONY
 To
gain power, Octavian had to
defeat several political rivals in
order to ensure he had the most
power, including Marc Antony,
Julius Caesar’s trusted friend
 Marc
Antony had married
Queen Cleopatra of Egypt and
while they plotted against
Octavian, he defeated them
both in 31 BC and they killed
themselves
OCTAVIAN BECOMES AUGUSTUS
 Octavian
told the people of
Rome he was going to
maintain the republic of
Rome, but this was
completely untrue
 Octavian
was in complete
control of Rome and the
senators gave him the
name “Augustus” which
means “honored”
AUGUSTUS IMPROVES ROME

police force, library, and fire
department
AUGUSTUS EXTENDS THE BORDERS OF THE EMPIRE
 Augustus
extended the borders
of the new Roman empire in all
four major directions:
 Judea
East
and Armenia in the
 The
Rhine and Danube Rivers
in the North
 The
Sahara Desert in the
South
 The
Atlantic Ocean in the
West
UPS AND DOWNS OF ROME UNDER AUGUSTUS
 The
empire required a strong
economy, so the Romans
improved trade routes by building
harbors, canals, and more roads.
They also had a unified form of
money
 Rome
also had its challenges such
as the Praetorian Guard who were
supposed to protect the emperor,
would murder several emperors
after Augustus
PAX ROMANA
