Civil War: Beginning To
End

1861
• Divisions between the North and South
erupted into a full-scale conflict after Lincoln
was elected as president.
• 11 states seceded from the Union.
• January 1861- The South Secedes and
creates a government.
• March 4, 1861- Lincoln is inaugurated.
• April 1861- The Attack on Fort Sumter
1861
• In June 1861 West Virginia is born a state.
• July 21st,1861, the first battle of the Civil War
had begun by a river named the Bull Run. This
battle was later renamed as the Battle of Bull
Run.
• The Union blockade on the Confederacy made
a huge impact.
1862
• Confederates won
victory over victory
due to poorly-led
Union forces.
• Confederate
General Robert E.
Lee suffered a
major loss at the
Battle of Antietam,
the bloodiest
engagement in the
war.
• Union General Grant
prevails at the battle
of Shiloh in
Tennessee.
1862
• Stonewall Jackson’s campaign begins
succession on May 8th.
• On September 22 Lincoln issued the
Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.
• Then, on December 13th Lee won the Battle
of Fredericksburg.
• January 1,
1863:Lincoln
issues the
Emancipation
Proclamation
• Lincoln signs
federal draft act.
• May 1 – 4:
“Stonewall”
Jackson is
wounded during
the Battle of
Chancellorsville.
He develops
pneumonia and
dies on May 10.

• On July 1st-3rd
the Battle of
Gettysburg was
in place.
• Then, on July
4th the
Confederates
surrendered the
Mississippi
River for the
Union.
• November 25th
the Union won
the battle at
Chattanooga,
Tennessee.
1864
• Ulysses S. Grant is given official
authority to command all armies in the
United States on March 10.
• June 1-3: The Battle of Cold Harbor
resulted in heavy Union casualties.
Grant plans a tenth month siege in
Petersburg.
• Lincoln signs a bill repealing the
fugitive slave laws.
1864
• Confederate forces under
Jubal Early probe and fire
upon the northern
defenses of Washington,
D.C., throwing the Capital
into a state of high alert.
• After forcing the
Confederate army of John
Bell Hood out of Atlanta,
Georgia, General William
T. Sherman captures the
city, a major munitions
center for the South.
1865
• Congress has passed Amendment XIII
in January 31.
• Lincoln was inaugurated for a second
term as president on March 4.
• The Appotomax campaign begins, as
Grant moves against Lee’s defenses at
Petersburg.
1865
• Petersburg falls while Confederate
government evacuates the capital on April
2nd.
• Union troops then occupies Richmond
• Robert E. Lee surrenders the Army of
Northern Virginia to Grant.
• John Wilkes Booth shoots Lincoln at Ford’s
Theatre. He dies the following day.

• Liberty was a French idea in 1865.
• The Confederacy had many flags. At the
beginning of the war, Grant was 39 years
old, while Lee was 54.
• Greater than 50,000 books were made
about the Civil War.
