Directors must provide an original condensed or full score for solos and ensembles for
the use of the judge. Measures must be numbered.
The performance time of a composition must not exceed six minutes.
All solos and ensembles with a written accompaniment must be performed with an
accompanist unless the accompaniment is listed as optional on the score.
Ensembles and Soloists must perform a minimum of 28 measures of music, excluding
any form of repeats, from one composition. Exception: Vocal Soloists may count repeats
as additional measures if the lyrics are different.
A director is allowed in a contest room while students from his or her school are
performing—to listen, accompany, or direct—without giving guidance or assistance to
the student.
Students may not wear uniform jackets or medals when performing a solo or ensemble.
Students may not wear any school identity clothing during performance.
All ensembles missing instrumental or voice parts shall be heard and rated on the
performance presented.
Instrumental Soloists must perform one scale of their choice and another in the key in
which the piece begins. Piano soloists play one octave with both hands simultaneously.
For percussion solo requirements refer to the requirement sheet. NOTE: First year
band and string students may perform one scale of their choice.
Student ratings will be lowered for non-compliance of requirements.
