(ITEM MM3/10) BUDDHA'S BIRTHDAY
Summary
Last week I have had the pleasure and the honour to meet with two Buddhist monks: The
Chinese master Venerable Zheng Yun Shi from the Ding Hui Dharma Centre and the
Korean master Venerable Boan Sunim from the Pori Temple.
They are seeking Burwood Council’s support to hold a special event in Burwood Park: a
celebration for Buddha’s Birthday, scheduled for Saturday 29 May.
The concept of the event, as outlined to me and to our Council Events team by the monks
and by the event organisers, involves uniting Buddhist monks and nuns from different
countries and the community into a celebration of cultures and peaceful harmonious
coexistence.
An event of this kind has never been held in the Inner West, and it is likely to attract 500-600
people.
The draft program runs from the morning until 3pm in the afternoon, and it includes a
ceremony with a statue of Buddha, music and dancing from different countries, and
approximately ten stalls providing food and drinks.
Council has been asked to waive park fees, bonds and power fees for the event, as listed
below:

$673.00 to be covered by the Mayor’s allowance.
