Chemical Family: Oxides
Oxides
Like ethers, oxides have an oxygen atom in the carbon chain, but it is usually combined in the shape of
a ring. They are usually derived from alcohols with the –OH group modified as the hydrogen is removed
and the oxygen bonds to another carbon to form a ring.
Pictured is the molecular structure of 1,8 cineole, a member of the Oxides chemical family.
Oxides Chemical Component Family and Oils that Have Them
The most common oxide is 1,8 cineole in the chemical component family. Most essential oils contain
1,8 cineole with the exception of German chamomile.

Oxides’ Therapeutic Properties
Oxides such as 1,8 cineole is a very powerful respiratory aide and can have anti-viral, antifungal,
antibacterial, expectorant, and mucolytic effects. Essential oils containing oxides can act as
expectorants as it stimulates mucus-secretion and activate the cilia of the mucous membranes. When
inhaled, these oils stimulate the brain and increase blood flow. Oils with 1,8 cineole can decrease
shortness of breath and have an anti-inflammatory effect on bronchial asthma (see safety
considerations).

Safety Considerations
People with asthma much use care with essential oils containing 1,8 cineole, as it could possibly set off
an attack. This is something that should be considered when choosing the oil, dilution, application and
circumstances. However, research shows that 1,8 cineole can help with respiratory disorders with its
anti-inflammatory effects on passageways, possibly allowing a reduction in oral steroid dosage.
Essential oils can oxidize, causing skin irritation and sensitization. It is also recommended to not use on
infants or children under ten years old.
The shelf life of essential oils containing oxides is two to three years.
