Description/Explanation
Folded Mountains
Folded mountains are formed
when the layers of rocks are
folded like a rug that has been
pushed up against a wall.
Fault Block Mountains
Formed from the tremendous
forces inside Earth squeeze
horizontal rock layers, causing
them to fold.
Fault-block mountains are
formed from huge blocks of
rock that are separated from
surrounding rocks by faults.
Upwarped Mountains
The faults are large fractures in
rocks along which mostly
vertical movement occurs.
Upwarped mountains form
when blocks of Earth’s crust are
pushed up by forces inside the
Earth.
Volcanic Mountains
Over time, the soil and
sedimentary rock at the top of
Earth’s crust erode.
Volcanic mountains form from
molten material reaches the
surface through a week area in
the crust.
