Cambridge English – Business Result
Throughout this course you will increase your confidence and skills in speaking and using the English
language. You will undertake tasks in order to develop your oral, written, reading and aural skills
within a business context. You will use your acquired skills in carrying out listening and reading
activities, participating in oral activities based on given case studies and completing written tasks .
Tasks will also be given in order to develop your skills in the use of English grammar.

Beginners English – Speaking skills
Throughout this course you will increase your confidence and skills in speaking and using the English
language. You will undertake tasks in order to develop your conversational skills and to enable you to
hold conversations in a variety of situations, both social and business related. You will use your
acquired oral skills in giving both individual and group presentations. You will be introduced to
writing simple texts such as emails and informal letters. You will carry out activities to improve your
aural skills and increase your understanding of English grammar.
PLA2 Marketing Processes
Marketing Processes for ELEC is based on PLA2 Marketing Processes, but is adapted for the English
Language and European Culture (ELEC) exchange program. There is more focus on oral and written
English skills by giving presentations and writing reports. The Marketing Processes for ELEC course
treats the marketing process as a basic structure for market-focused acting. In this course the focus
will be on the basis of the entire marketing process in particular the subsections of marketing
analysis, segmenting and target group identification as well as the marketing-mix.
This course consists primarily of interactive lectures (theory) connected with topic-referred, practiceoriented exercises and report writing. Students will train their English skills throughout the course by
having presentations on marketing theory, writing a report and participating in group discussions.
Marketing is defined in economic theory and practice as the fundamental adjustment of all
enterprise activities in the business market. The goal of every marketer is to create more value for
customers. It starts with understanding consumer needs and wants, deciding which target markets
the organization can serve best and developing a compelling value proposition by which the
organization can attract, keep and grow targeted consumers.
PLA7 Dutch for Beginners
This Learning Arrangement (LA) helps the student to acquire a practical knowledge of spoken Dutch.
This LA focuses mainly on spoken Dutch. However, listening, reading and writing skills are being
considered as well.
PLA9 Fontys Project
In this learning arrangement (LA) student groups (5 students) develop a business plan for a fictitious
start-up student company. In developing and writing the business plan every student group will have
to take management decisions on organisational, marketing, and financial issues with the help the
results of relevant market researches, business theory aspects and personal insights. Apart from the
necessary know-how in different fields of business, the student groups will have to develop other
competences such as attitude, team work, interviewing and report writing to hand in a convincing
final deliverable : a 30-page business plan.
PLA14 Business English
This Learning Agreement (LA) helps the student to acquire oral business communication skills in the
form of meeting skills and presentation skills.
Meetings
At end of this section, the student plans, participates in, and leads a structured discussion. This
means that the student uses highly polite, indirect word usage to deal with conflicts, to steer
discussions and to get the point across during meetings.
Presentations
At end of this section, student speaks effectively in public at first year level. This entails the following.
First, the student learns to structure a presentation by using clear transitions and signals to steer the
audience. Secondly, the student makes real contact with audience by using the fourteen
communication channels in a natural manner. Thirdly, the student delivers speech well. This means
that the student’s English is easy to understand, it conveys enthusiasm, it is phonetically, lexically,
grammatically, and idiomatically correct. Fourthly, the student gives good feedback on observed
presentation performance of other students by stating what went well and what could be improved.
Culture
During this course students will develop their insight in the origins of cultures, what cultures are
influenced by and how our cultures can affect our own behaviour. Throughout this course students
will increase confidence and skills in working and communicating in an intercultural environment.
The course is aimed on improving understanding and communication between different cultures.
Students will undertake group- and individual exercises in order to gain experience influencing cross
cultural communication. All experiences from the exercises and excursions will be documented in the
individual portfolio’s.
Fontys Didactic Training “The Art of Teaching Project”
The “Art of Teaching course” is a general didactical course and a study program specially designed for
international students that want to learn about the specific Dutch way of education.
Competency based and Problem based courses.
We aim to offer an internship day at a local school (2 students per school) to have most effective way
of learning and training in an professional educational environment.
Education, the purpose is to educate individuals within society, to prepare and qualify them for work
in economy as well as to integrate people into society and teach them values and morals of society.
To guide them on the way to become a world citizen.
Education in society prepares youngsters for adulthood so that they may form the next generation of
leaders. To guide them to develop their full potentials/talents.

DLC – Dutch Language and Culture
During this course we hope you will become familiar with the language and the cultural highlights of
the country you will be living in the coming half year: Holland! We hope that in this way you will feel
more comfortable in our country, that you will get to know some of your fellow exchange students in
an informal and pleasant way, and most of all: we hope that you will return home with some basic
Dutch language skills and some basic cultural knowledge, that will have an added value both when
you apply for a job, and when you decide to visit our country again!
Goals of this course:
1) To acquire some basic knowledge of Dutch and European culture, history and habits.
2) To acquire some basic knowledge of the Dutch language
3) To develop some basic Dutch language skills.
