 From Medieval times to the Renaissance
 Feudalism- Reviewed Feudal Pyramid- At the end of the Middle ages the Feudal Pyramid fell
apart, which led to the Renaissance
 What changes in Europe caused the Renaissance?

The Black Plague Killed 1/3 of Europe’s population & price of crops went down

Fewer serfs to work land weakened Feudal System

Hundred Years War allowed Kings to build huge armies & reduced power of lords.

Trade Increased-Silk Road connected Europe and China

People moved to cities to earn more money- Status determined by wealth & ability,
not by class born into
 What were the effects of the changes in Europe?

Middle class merchants made a lot of money by organizing banks

Rise of City-States: Italian cities traded with foreign merchants and became rich &
powerful.

Crusades made Europeans eager to learn about the world

Medici family used their profits to promote education & arts

Scholars & artists looked to art & writing from Ancient Greece and Rome for guidance
 Renaissance = Rebirth

A “rebirth” of art, writing and thinking, and a belief in human potential.
 Where did the Renaissance Begin?

Began in Northern Italy

Trade routes between Europe and Asia passed through northern Italy

Development of cities: Florence, Venice, and Milan
 Florence, more than any other city, symbolized and became the center of the
Italian Renaissance.

Main theory of Renaissance
 Seek happiness in daily life
 Individual has worth and rights
 Look to Greek/Roman developments for inspiration
 Emphasis on classical subject such as history, grammar, literature, and
philosophy
