Competitive radioimmunoassay. (A) No drug from the specimen is present to displace the I125 -labeled drug. Adding the cross-linking antibody
precipitates the assay antibody, along with high amounts of bound radioactivity. (B) Unlabeled drug in the specimen displaces some of the labeled drug.
The displaced label is left in solution when the cross-linking antibody is added, resulting in less radioactivity in the precipitate.
