INFLUENCE OF ENVIRONMENT ON HUMAN NEEDS
SATISFACTION
Summary
Monika Müllerová
Key words
Anthropology, environment, human ecology, human population, life needs
Thesis description
The thesis is focused on studies of relations between a selected human population
(alternatively life needs of individuals) and their environment. Initially, the official statistic data
will be acquired and proceed by means of geodemographic methods (concerning population
category after age, sex, intelligence etc. in studied area). This data will be a basis source for further
sociological and anthropological field research. The research will be concentrated on secondary
human needs (regarding leisure time, dwelling, information access, labour opportunities etc.),
especially a rate of their satisfaction in particular population categories. Consequently, the role of
environment will be evaluated in the process of satisfying human needs (geographical and manmade factors of environment).
The research topics are close to human ecology but in many questions they meet social
anthropology or sociology. They also touch geography and geodemography using their methods
and thematic maps.
Area
The area under investigation is delimited by Šternberk City and 20 neighbouring villages
(approximately 29, 000 inhabitants) and comprises two different types of environment – the
Hornomoravský úval lowland and the Nizký Jeseník highland.
Main aims
The main aims of thesis are following:
1. to study cultural and social needs of studied population and to define structure, range
and way of their satisfaction,
2. to analyse influences between above-mentioned categories (how the population is
able to use sources of its environment and in contrary, how the environment satisfies
its needs),
3. to analyse influence of different types of environment (lowland, highland),
4. to present results in GIS (geographical information systems) using thematic maps,
5. to demonstrate integration of different methods of social anthropology, sociology,
ecology and geography
Scientific benefit
The research will bring answers to a lot of questions:
1. What are the priorities of life needs in studied population? What does make the
differences?
2. Are the life needs adequately satisfied (in both short and long-term period)?
3. Is the population in acceptable process? Is it possible to detect any “pathologic”
aspects?
4. Where is the environment in a hierarchy of life needs?
5. What are the spatial differences of investigated factors?
