* This information usually identifies which individuals
and groups of animals are affected. It may also
indicate the urgency of the problem.
* Stockpersons usually know their animals in detail, and
reported subtle changes in behaviour should not be
dismissed.
* The extent of the problem or the exact nature of the
problem may not be appreciated by the owner, and
the clinician should attempt to maintain an objective
view.

* Breed, age, colour and production class are all
important in diagnosing the problem as some
diseases are specific to some of these
groupings and this knowledge can be useful in
reducing the diseases that need to be
considered

* History of the patient- vaccines, deworming,
previous disorders, surgical history
* History of the diseases in the herd
* History of diseases on the farm
*
* Assess environment for predisposing factors
such as housing, pasture, cleanliness
*
* Patient should be examined at a distance first,
then up close.
* Examination should not be limited to the eye
as systemic condition can result in ocular
disorders
* The rest of the herd should be assesses as well.
