ASPECT OF CARE – REVIEW CRITERIA
SPINAL IMMOBILIZATION
100% of all trip sheets of patients with Spinal Immobilization shall be reviewed to
include the following Aspects of Care.
BLS Criteria:

Patient’s Name/age

Mechanism of injury

SAMPLE history to include:
S = Signs/Symptoms
A = Allergies
M = Medications
P = past medical history
L = Last oral intake
E = Events leading up to incident

Trauma Assessment to include:
D = deformities
C = contusions
A = abrasions
P = punctures/penetrations
B = burns
T = tenderness
L = lacerations
S = swelling

Physical exam findings (in addition to the above) to include:
Level of consciousness:
A = alert
V = verbal
P = painful
U = unresponsive
Level of distress, skin color/temp., lung sounds, neurological exam
(sensation, perception & movement), pupils and vital sounds.
TREATMENTS:
- Appropriate size of cervical collar and use immobilization device(s) ie: short
board, KED, long spine board, spider and other straps.
- REMEMBER: documentation of sensation/perception/movement prior to and
after immobilization.
ALS CRITERIA: all BLS criteria or documentation of ALS protocol (attached)
where applicable.
